Need advice/help on what model to order this time...

I’ve been building stuff back and forth on the builder... just kinda of stuck on which model to choose... and why I should choose one over the other... for my 2020 I chose the Max Tow but I am looking at upgrading to the Eco diesel and feel it would probably tow just the same...

What I am looking at is...

8 speed auto
Forward facing trail cam (only in Overland)
Body color hard top (Overland)
Body color flares
Back and forth on Leather or not
8.4” Premium Audio group
Remote start
Alpine premium audio

I am either looking at a Sport S, Willy’s, 80th anniversary (hoping Freedom edition is same) or Overland - maybe High Altitude (not a fan of 20’s on a Jeep)

Trying to sort out best model that will price the best with these options... and what I would get over the other.

My 2020 Max Tow has upgraded Rubicon Fox Shocks, Oracle Oculus LED’s, Ironcross side steps, Wheels and Tires... I will likely move all that to the Eco Diesel.

Trying to figure out what the best package is to go with... the Freedom Edition may be it considering what I have read.


Any advice is appreciated. Trying to arm myself with knowledge. Here’s a pic of mine currently.

What don't you like about yours? You've got a great rig and can add most of that stuff to what you currently have.
Front facing camera can be had from zautomotive or other online places. Upgrade to the 8.4" screen and with the tazer can add the off-road pages.

I like your current rig better than the description of the new rig.

for the money you are going to eat in trade and that diesel you could take the current ride a lot farther. To me the weaker rear end is a big sacrifice. Will take years to roll over the cost of the diesel and if fuel goes back up you may never break even. If you go forward get the better rear end.

You have several options that suggest you should be looking at an Overland. --e.g., painted top and fenders, leather, etc.

I am not too familiar with the Freedom package, but if it is anything like on Wrangler, the Freedom Edition should be like an Overland-lite. If so, you should be focusing on Overland and Freedom.

In past iterations, Freedom did not give the choice of a body-colored top or leather seats. If those are important to you, then Overland has your name on it.

I looked into doing that for my JKUR Recon, but the quotes I received from several body shops were totally ridiculous: $1,000 to $1,500 to prime and paint. If I wanted the lumpy finish of the black hardtop smoothed down, it was a lot more still.

What you are describing in your want list is a fully loaded Overland. Be sure and add the Proximity Locks to your list, they are a great feature. When I choose a vehicle, I pick as if it may be the last one I ever buy. I get every available option. I have a fully loaded White Overland. The front camera wasn't an option when the build was started (March 2019) and it came with the Black Freedom top. I originally wanted a body color top, but the black provides a nice contrast to the white truck.

I have already been offered an excellent trade in on my 2020... and a discounted price on this build.

some say the freedom will have the steel bumpers... I don’t want all those stickers tho.

I would prefer to have color matched fenders but the color matched top is not exactly a must. I like the idea of a front trail camera but not a must leather seats not a must in this...

If mine had a diesel and had the bigger screen I would be just fine with it but I hate this 5” screen it is garbage.

Agree about the 8.4 screen. I can understand that. I’d think about the rear axle though. Even if you dont plan big lift or big towing now having the bigger axle would make sense as a long term investment.

i have the alpine stereo and the led group and nav and 8.4 and cold weather. Also have the blind spot warning and backup sensors. You are right these are great things to have.

I’m gonna put on my Dr. Phil hat for a second: I think you are looking for someone to help you convince yourself that you are doing the right thing by trading in a 2020 JT for a 2021 with the 8.4” screen.

I don’t think anyone can answer that question but yourself.

If I were in your shoes and were looking to get rid of a brand-new truck for another, and money were no object, I’d make sure the new truck has everything I think I might want on it, to avoid being in a similar situation in six months.

If this means getting the painted top and the painted fenders, etc., I’d make sure the 2021 better has them, and in the right color, too.

Here’s some info on the Freedom Edition. It is a Sport and includes everything in a Sport S plus some additions. It comes with premium soft top, leather stitched cloth seats, steel front and rear bumpers, rock sliders, LED head and fog Lights, and some USA flag/military badging along with some other cosmetic things. The body color flares are included, but a body color top is not even an option. 8.4, tow, and cold weather are all additional, just like a Sport S.

For your needs, definitely start at the Overland. And, if money is not an issue, then just order one with every option and you won’t have any regrets.

I’d stay with the overland/rubicon/mojave trim levels if you want to max out creature comforts.

also, agree with Dr. Phil. If you are going to try to fix what you dont like about yours then go all the way with it.

It seems like towing is the key for you... so, you have different needs than me, but, since you asked.... --- We 4wheel a lot. Almost every other day now with Covid. We have lots of mountains, hills, rocks around us. I was surprised how much I use the sway bar disconnect and lockers on the Rubicon, especially when I do not want to air down. Sway bar disconnect also helps smooth out those straight bumpy dirt roads. I also like the Rubicon lower gears in 4WL when going over big rocks. If I traded my 2020 for a 2021 diesel, hands down, I would get the Rubicon model again.
