I went to NAPA today and purchased new batteries for the JT. I was following the advice of some in this group and went to put the primary battery on the charger to get it ready for install this weekend. Sadly the battery read 6.29v.

I have done a little research and some say don‘t install and return it. What is the consensus here? Should I return even though I have a NOCO charger which should revive it?

Thanks.

You don't know how long it sat that way. AGM batteries on a shelf have a low rate of self-discharge. This suggests it sat around for a very long time, and at a low voltage.
Return it.

Yes, always charge new batteries before installation (and while swapping batteries, leave the IBS off/disconnected so it resets)
That way you start with 100% fully charged batteries and an IBS that will start fresh on the fresh batteries. It should quickly learn the batteries and life will be good again.

Frankly, I'm surprised at that low voltage off the shelf!

Return it
Yeah.

Nope, see image below.

Pretty sure I got the answer to my question this morning.…

Last night before I posted my question, I put it on the NOCO charger for .5 hours or so, took the voltage and it had gone up to 7.20v or somewhere in that range. I took the charger back off overnight. Just a moment ago, before taking this photo, I measured it again and the battery has already dropped to 6.6v.

Something definitely wrong with it.

Yeah.
11/23 on the sticker! Think that is well above low rate discharge huh? 6.6v this morning, down from a 7.2v small charge with the NOCO last night.

Return

Batteries take a hit when tbe get discharged to that level. Typically the battery should have come from the factory 100% (12.6v+) charged. This shows me that this particular NAPA doesn't sell many batteries and is pushing their old stock.

Except he said the code on the battery is something like November 2023.
That's a heck of a drop in 3 months. Sitting, unloaded, I'd expect 12.1 or so depending.
The full SoC voltage of an AGM battery is 12.7-12.8
As 2% drop per month, which would be closer to the high end, that's still over 12 volts after 3 months.

Agreed... something is definitely going on with that one. I didn't see the manufacturer date until after the post.. regardless same advice RETURN IT !
