Does anyone have a preference on off-roading apps. I know about all-trails and On X, but are they worth paying for? Are there any other apps or websites people use? Preferably with difficulty ratings and comments.

Jeep wave is giving 6 months of onX for free. I got an email saying that onX will soon be able to display on the uConnect screen.

Does Gaia show trails or is it just a map? Got their trial version but it just looks like a map. Also trying the ONX version and they have "discover" that searches for known trails. I wish they had a discounted price if you already use it for hunting.

That'll be pretty awesome for hunting if they integrated that in. Gotten lost getting back to my vehicle a few times.

Agreed on the discount for hunting. I have the Onx Hunt "Elite" membership so I can access maps from multiple states, I struggle to justify the Onx offroad membership on top of that.

I actually have Onx Hunt running on my Insane Audio headunit, its kinda like using a wrench when you need a hammer, but it DOES allow you to download maps, drop pins, create and track routes... Ive used it for wheeling trips and its done just fine.

My buddy has been using Gaia for years and swears by it, going to try running that on my phone next time Im out and see if I can get an apples to apples comparison.

It shows trails of all kinds: off-roading, hiking, mountain biking, forest roads. Also allows you to browse trails in an area and create a route manually to guide you.

I like Trails Off-road. I think they have the best UI. I have Gaia for backup, offline stuff other than off-roading, and CarPlay support although it’s buggy. tried onx a couple of times but don’t like the UI. Trails off-road has hinted at CarPlay support but no ETA as they just released their mobile app.

I use Gaia primarily, but I will say that I would look elsewhere if you aren't going to buy the premium membership for $40/yr. That gives you access to all their maps (which are substantial) and offline nav.

I use it often enough the $4 a month is worth it to me. I might try Onx for the free 6 month trial, but it seemed a bit too simplistic when I tried it last year.

On the head unit…the app

Not sure about the free app, but if you gave it on your phone, you should have it on/in the head unit. They work together. The head unit screen is more like a larger monitor for your phone.
