That oil is actually Hot Shot's Secret in a Doc's bottle.
Yeah, pretty sure it's just a repackaged version of Hot Shot's Secret's Gray Diamond 5W-40. Interestingly, Gray Diamond is not listed as meeting Chrysler MS-12991, and in the reviews/comments section of the product, Hot Shot's routinely says it doesn't recommend the oil because it doesn't meet Chrysler's niche specification.

I hate when they change the manual... This is from my 2022. Looks like we're both right?

Yeah, it's a bit ridiculous. The constantly changing "recommendations" and "requirements" makes me just not worry about it too much. I've used full SAPS euro oils, a mid SAPS euro oil, and am now running a CK-4 oil that I'll probably stick with so long as UOA results come back good, and I won't have any anxiety about it since the manufacturer really doesn't seem to know what's "right" for this motor beyond just a full synthetic 5W-40 that is compatible with modern emissions

I have no idea why Ram/Jeep switched to the Chrysler MS-12991 spec for the 3rd gen EcoDiesel when Rotella T6 seems to work just as well, plus T6 is better for the emissions system. DPFs are clogging with ash on the Gen 3 EcoDiesel. That wasn't an issue on the Gen 2 EcoDiesel with the lower SAPS oil.

My guess? To appease the EPA. My understanding is that full SAPS euro oils are designed to be packed with additives so manufacturers can plausibly claim that use of the oil allows an increase in the intervals one can change the oil at (e.g., 10k miles). This video explains that pretty well, albeit a bit crassly:

I've been skeptical of the full SAPS oils for the DPF clogging reasons you've mentioned, which is why I used a mid SAPS oil for a while and recently switched to a CK-4 oil, both of which are better for emissions systems.

I agree. It appears that the auto manufactures earn credits for extended oil drain intervals. Check out the video below. Lake Speed specifically talks about that. I marked the video where Lake addresses it.

Where do you find the ash or saps content? This is what I've been using since the last oil change on Jeep wave program. I've had no issues so far in almost 60k miles.

Motul X-cess gen 2 is full SAPS, which is in the 1.2% - 1.6% range. You have to get out of the Chrysler MS-12991 spec if you want a low SAPS oil. I would recommend Amsoil AFL. It's 0.8%.

Well I've had no problems with it. I'll just keep using it.

You won't have problems until about 100,000 miles when you start noticing frequent regens. Trust me, we are seeing DPFs needing to be replaced in the 100,000 - 130,000-mile range with full SAPS oils.

To your point, the early manuals actually stated Rotella T6. ;)

How do you know the SAPS level?

How about Valvoline Premium Blue 5w40?

When I delete the truck, does the oil matter as much? Genuine question as a diesel is an all new experience for me.
