Amsoil MS is still considered the best oil for this platform. We had a 3rd gen EcoDiesel owner log 13,625 miles on Amsoil MS with good results. He sampled at 9,000, 12,000, and 13,500 miles to watch the progression. So far, we haven't found an oil that can last as long as Amsoil MS. Plus, Amsoil MS is a mid-SAPS oil and is better for the DPF. Castrol Edge is a high-SAPS oil, so it's not ideal for the DPF.
Very good to know!

I read through a lot of this thread.
I then called AMSOIL - as I was ready to switch from Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 to AMSOIL European Formula FS 5W-40.

Here are the facts - just facts don't shoot the messenger :)

Through my discussion with AMSOIL - AMSOIL confirmed that they do not meet MS-12991.
AMSOIL did say their oil meets he "Performance standards" but nt the "Technical Standards"

This issue is the amount of "Sulfur".
The MS-12991 standards include that sulfur cannot exceed .25%.
The AMSOIL representative told me their sulfur is .28%.

Yes, this is a very small difference, .02 of a % too much sulfur - but due to this it is a "fact" that AMSOIL does not meet MS-12991.

As my vehicle engine is under warranty - I will continue to use the Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40, however, I will change the oil every 7,000 miles. This should help level the playing field.

So is the lower noack volatility rating of the MS worth the trade for the lower sulfur content of the FS? Hmmmmmm......

I'm under extended warranty for another 3yrs or 125K miles, so I will likely stay with the recommended oil.

Yes, I would stay with the Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 and just change the oil every 5,000 to 7,000 miles - at this time AMSOIL does not have any oil that meets the MS-12991 requirement

Funny how many times this is going to go around in circles. The MS-12991 is an outdated spec that Amsoil FS meets/exceeds? My understanding is Amsoil doesn't pay license the MS-12991 spec so it can't be printed on the bottle.

Amsoil FS is a good oil, but Amsoil MS is one of the best oils you can run in the Gen 3 EcoDiesel. But, if you're worried about warranty, then I would stick with the dealer recommended oil.

Just use the original oil that came with the truck from the factory, don't change it cause you risk upsetting the warranty. .

The screwy thing about the Penz and many other mainstream oils labeled as "synthetic" is that they really aren't synthetic at all...... I have a hard time not using a better product when it's available and will pay me back with longer drain intervals and protection.

NAD allowed these manufacturers to cheat IMO and deceive buyers who think they are buying synthetic oils when they are in fact not getting what they think in the bottle. Only in the USA.......

Correct. I don't let warranty dictate how I'm going to operate or maintain my vehicles. I don't fault those who don't want to jeopardize warranty, but I also think that some people lose their critical thinking abilities by being hampered by the system.

I don't want to jeopardize my warranty, but I do believe my manual states the oil must meet the MS-12991 spec which the FS does. It may not say it on the bottle because of licensing rights, but Amsoil told me is exceeds the old bs spec.

The later manuals actually state you must use an API licensed oil? Are there any PAO (type 4) or Ester (type 5) offerings that are API licensed?

in the latest revision, Stellantis doesn't limit you to the MS-12991 spec. It now says:

"Equivalent full synthetic SAE 5W-40 engine oil can be used but must be complaint to API SN/SP and ACEA (A3/B4) specifications."

According to the oil gurus, any oil that carries the MB229.5 (A3/B4) or MB229.51 (C3) designation will have identical performance requirements as MS-12991. The only difference is oil life expectancy. In short, MS-12991 is just an older designation that isn't designed for the DPF. But as you alluded to, it's all that Shell had to offer, so that was the designation we got.

The MS-12991 oil can handle high heat/pressures, which is why Stellantis changed from the MS-10902 spec to the MS-12991 spec. Well, Amsoil MS has the C3 designation, which handles both the high heat/pressure and is designed for modern diesel emissions system.

But more importantly, Amsoil MS has outperformed the other oils in durability and lower wear numbers.

I'm still using the Motul 8100 Gen 2. Changed every 7k almost 80k on the motor currently. No issues so far.

Based on the data we've seen, the Motul X-Clean Gen 2 5W-40 is a top performing oil. Amsoil Euro MS can holdup longer, but the Motul is very impressive for those 7,000 - 8,000 mile oil change intervals.

Ok, my 2015 Ram eco diesel has 150 thousand miles on it. I’ve always used T6.
Is this 3 gen any different.
