Here's a little video compilation a friend of mine put together. It was at Hidden Falls -
Where is that in relation to Houston? It's been a long time since I've lived there but I go back about once a year to visit my brother in law. I typically don't drive my Jeep but actual trail opportunities may change the equation!

Speaking of wheeling in Houston... who all is going to this?

It's a big fundraiser at Wolf Caves. We will be there with a bunch of my JK buddies.

When I read the thread header I was thinking just what you said... Especially since I drove down there to visit family there. A truck driving in front of me lost the bump stop out of vehicle due to the rock garden of a road, it bounced back and into my JT grille and fender. The dang county roads had a higher speed limit than the I-State heading back from Houston.?
Now on the MI comment hell I'd rather do a heavy drop of me and my JT into Iraq than drive in Detroit again. In 03 I was taking with a fellow soldier heading back Stateside from Iraq that was depressed I asked him why he said he was going back home to Detroit and found Bagdad Iraq safer. ?
From at least 1999- 2015 the excuses for roads in B-ham AL. was worse than MSR Tampa from Scandia to Bagdad in 03/04.... Anyone else here that traveled that "road" knows how F###ed up it was. At least Iraq had a good reason why. ?

It's 4.5 hours away. Northwest of Houston.

I'm in North West Houston. Hidden Falls is a bit over 3 hours away. Its the closest public off road park that isn't a mud park. There used to be a place closer called Brazos Valley off road, but its not open to the public anymore afiak.

Next closest would be Barnwell, and then Wolfcaves etc...

So for those of you wondering how someone living in Houston and the suburbs goes offroading in such a flat area. It's kind of simple. We just take a drive into the city itself. Jump off the freeway and get on side/crossroads like Fondren, Richmond, Voss, Westheimer, etc. The roads will rival most offroad locations and possibly top them. They are laden with so many huge potholes, bumps, loose cement. You could easily have your left front tire up on a large bump in the road while the right tire is down in a hole.
We don't have the worry of falling off a cliff if we get off the path but we will have the same destruction of your truck getting smashed by someone if you try to dodge these obstacles.
This is soooo true!!!

LOL!

In the mid-90's I lived down there and took my YJ with a Hummer club to Spring Creek. There were some good trails, some sand, and a couple really good water crossings, one of which claimed a Hummer's 6.2. He caught a bow wave over the hood and the intake at the base of the windshield was under water long enough to hear, "POP!" I felt so bad for the guy. My little YJ crossed it not far from where he did, but I missed the deep hole he hit. The guy that runs River Oaks Car Stereo, Eddie Runner, invited me to go with them. Great guy. Not sure if he still wheels, or not, but he was into Unimogs a few years later. Had a taste for expensive off-roaders! My little YJ was only $11,700 brand new! Lol!

I worked at Sam Houston High School on Tidwell. If you worked late at night, you could go off-roading on your way home AND dodge bullets while doing it! LOL!
Yeah Spring Creek Off road like 10 years ago. They ended up building a subdivision and walking/biking trails around it.

Cool I might have to go out that way one day to watch the trucks go through the trails. Is there like a kiddie trail I could take my truck on
Bingo! Exactly what I’m saying!

I'd say about half the trails are level 1 and 2's which most regular SUVs could complete. We only had level 3 and 4's on the video and often the more tough lines were chosen.

A good example would be Wet & Wild. -- That was a trail where you see the 2 door JK sort of spinning its tires. I think its a level 3? but there is a bypass for that tough spot. Only myself and 2 other folks went up that slippery rock wall.

Anyone else know of some random spots around/near the city to wheel at?

I’m basically just bumping the thread.

Probably the one thing I struggle with living here, the most "off roading" to do locally is to drive to the beach, which is fine and all and fun for the family, but I haven't even owned this thing for a week yet and I am already hunting around for anything I can throw at it. Drove over a curb at the store near me to take a back gravel path even though I don't have to, just because I could.

I dunno that I would want to live up in WV where my in-laws live, but I have to admit that I am pretty envious of the roads and trails they have up there in the mountains all over the place.
