OnX app sucks!

If you want to try something different… try the GURU map app (formerly Galileo). My motorcycle group finds it helpful. It’s the only phone app that uses vector based map data. Meaning you download the entire state of country for offline use. The file sizes are that small. Guru can even give turn by turn directions offline. It’s a solid app.
I’ve found OnX was missing trails and took too much preplanning.

I use them both but prefer Gaia. I use them side by side when mapping my trips. OnX has great info on private and public lands. It seems Gaia works best with my apple car play, not a single issue.

I’ve had OnX, Gaia, and Avenza leave me high and dry all at once onetime in the backcountry. Did not like that at all, had to paper map my way out.

After that experience i paid what’s honestly a ridiculous amount of money for the Garmin Tread Overland 8”, so I would have a constant satellite GPS fallback if need be. I don’t feel like getting into all the details of it, but overall, I’d say buying that Tread was one of the best and most useful pieces of off-road equipment I’ve ever bought. The amount of times it’s gotten our group out of sticky routing decisions is almost immeasurable.

If you can pre-plan your route on Google maps, dragging to change routes and adding midpoints, and then start the route somewhere where you have service, as long as you don't close the app the route will stay intact and track your progress accurately with GPS.
I did the pre-planning on my desktop system and then sent it my phone (Android).
I made sure that I started the trip in an area that had service and then kept it opened for the whole day.
As a backup I used Maps.Me with offline maps downloaded to the phone in advance.
I switched to that once during the trip to figure out which path to take where several came together in a forest on a mountain.

Interesting experiences with OnX. I actually like it. Simple to use. Fairly accurate (unless our road engineer does a last minute change with a road access). Also pretty up to date with timber harvest units (for those who hunt). GAIA is also great, and so is caltopo for those wanting some light GIS calculations, but OnX is easy and simple without all the extra complexities. I like it - aside from the finicky issues with car play, it works just fine for me.

I couldn’t figure out the appeal of onX. I prefer and use Gaia - I downloaded maps for Death Valley and it worked fine in areas that definitely had no reception.

I punted Gaia to the curb, I found it to be completely unstable. It left me stranded in the absolute boonies, thank god for paper maps.

Yes I had downloaded the tracks and maps. Every time I would touch the screen with gaia running it would crash and often times it would take the tablet with it...

As bad as I hate to do it, I am going back to a dedicated gps (Garmin Tread 5.5 base model)...

Ps. I tried OnX and it was at least stable...

All trails is great for what I need. Lots of hiking info too. I didnt like the onX mapping UI at all.

I recently did a trip with OnX and was very disappointed. I downloaded maps ahead of time into the offline maps, both detailed maps and high level maps. Everything seemed fine until i stopped to get out of the Jeep to check out some local scenery. I got back in, started up the jeep and OnX wouldn't load anything, including the offline maps. Restarted phone, and car... nothing helped. Used built in navigation system to find my way out. I was REALLY disappointed.
It sounds like some here indicate the app must never 'go to sleep' or phone shut off, to me, that is just stupid. I'm never able to stop and take lunch? What about camping overnight? to me that's not a reasonable solution.

Wow, I must be the lucky one. OnX Off-road works perfectly for me. No real complaints at all. I live in the wilds of Wyoming where there's no cell service more than there is cell service. Offline maps is about all I use.

UConnect maps work great and the sat NAV component works when there’s no cell service.

I agree with this, I got the scam too. Paid the fee, doesnt work for crap. The Jeep Nav work good enough for everything so far. Or Google maps does the job and much better

Gaia is what I like and use. Someone here said it was unstable, and I also read that somewhere before I subscribed. They also said it works best on Apple, so I bought a iPad mini and it has worked no prob, it's been flawless. I have downloaded half a dozen states for offline. Besides maps/gps I use the iPad as a dedicated Gladiator unit with jscan, Banks Pedal Monster, music, a few other off-road travel type apps. It's been great so far, very helpful. A little expensive to have the separate iPad when you can just use your phone, but it's good backup and the large screen is sweet. Very happy.
