I don’t know about everyone else, but it seems to be way harder to sell privately rather than to take a small loss and trade in your vehicle nowadays.

Are you still making payments on the Jeep? That could play a part in how fast you want to sell, making trading in more attractive. If the Jeep is paid off and you’re not in a rush, sure, sell privately if you can.

I do agree it’s better to turn back to stock as much as possible. Dealers can use your modifications to actually devalue your Jeep (If trading in). Most of the time if you trade in (taking a small loss) and sell all your mods separately, you can make up for what you lost in the trade in.

Either way, I’m sure the marketplace on the forum or even Facebook will aid in helping with selling the aftermarket parts.

Best of luck with the sale!
Yeah I don't ever trade... It only benefits the dealer. I am very comfortable selling it outright :)

Depends. Also, the tax credit savings is nice. You do you!

I was fishing around with trading to take advantage of discounted gladiators on employee pricing but that has crushed resale pricing and trade value. My 18 month old Mojave has dropped approximately 18k in value.

Are you referring to the difference in sales tax (sales tax of new vehicle minus the sales tax of old vehicle based on what dealer paid you for it)? In Missouri, all you need is a signed bill of sale for the old vehicle.

I bought my JTR back in July 2019 and I was right side up within 12 months. That was 4 years ago, though. I was on my sofa shopping for a new one since it's 4 years old and I'd really like to get a new one before they completely end production. but prices have gone up $15k since I bought. Of course, I added a couple of more options than I already have, but I also left off a couple, too. I just can't stomach paying $65,000 for a new version of what I already have.

In Maryland, if you trade in, you get a credit towards sales tax which can save you a couple thousand. If you sell privately, you cannot get the credit towards your next dealer purchase.

You have to calculate the tax savings based on what the dealer is offering you for the vehicle, vs the delta between the private sell price.

I have always more than offset the tax savings with the sell price delta.

It is a rarity to come out ahead trading a vehicle...

But you do you...

Edit: Plus I have never actually purchased a vehicle in FL (sold several). The dealers don't seem as hungry as those that I have ultimately purchased from. But the closers they send out are a ball to play with :)

Yes, a private sale will most likely always come out more than trading in. But, Gladiators at the price they are at now, with the incentives and discounts, it would be hard getting your asking price (depending) versus someone going to a dealer. Maybe you are the ultimate salesman and have people lined up to buy the Gladiator. Also, time is money for a lot of people.

A lot of times, you can negotiate with a dealer how much you are getting for a trade in if you are purchasing from them too - takes some skill, but they want to move vehicles. I have ripped off a few dealers back in the day LOL. Again, it sounds like you are in no rush, so I hope you get what you ask for it.

I may be interested in some parts you are taking off - looking forward to your future marketplace threads!

I just sold my 2016 Wrangler (with low mileage) to a local dealership. All my mods (lift, exhaust, air intake, amp power steps, bumpers, wheels/tires) were left on. I took the winch off as I had just purchased it. They gave me more due to the mods I had installed, the sales manager provided me that little amount of information when I picked up the check as they were tastefully done. Now all my body & window decals, front American flag grill insert - they took off after I sold it to them. I do regret not taking the grill insert, but my loose. I rode by and took a look at it a week later and of course it didn't look like my wrangler anymore - except for the wheels (one of kind with white inserts). I normally sell mine out right, but the gladiator I found was up for sale and I had to act quickly or it was going to be gone.

When I was getting ready to buy my JT, the dealerships weren't offering me much for my 2010 JKU (Mild mods: lift, wheels, tires & bumpers). I sold it to a neighbor that has been asking about it for a year. I got double what the dealerships offered.

I have never purchased a vehicle in FL, the dealers are just not hungry.

When I purchased my '21 gladiator, I sold my used vehicle outright for about $4k more than they were offering on trade and I purchased the Gladiator for about $6K less then their "best price"

I have purchased vehicles from Texas, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Tennessee, just to name a few.

Dealers are nothing more than a necessary evil to get warranty work done.
