It doesn’t help I actually tried to read the manual since there’s a million new electronics ( unfortunately ) but this thing legit says “the preferred shifting is 0 to 45 mph. With the vehicle in motion, the transfer case will engage/disengage faster if you momentarily release the accelerator pedal AFTER ( my emphasis ) completing the shift. DO NOT ( my emphasis again ) accelerate while shifting the transfer case.”

To shift into 4Hi, you can be in Drive and going 0-45mph. I interpret this as rolling at that speed with my foot OFF the gas pedal.

For 4Lo, you should be in neutral and 1-3 mph creep helps, then shift back into drive when that 4Lo light stops blinking and is lit up. Again, foot off the gas pedal while transferring to 4Lo. However, you should be able to shift into 4Lo from a stop, in neutral anyway though.

Side note: I don’t know about the offroad + mode. Someone else will have to chime in. I would imagine it works more like the 4Hi switch tho.

So my last off road specific was an 88 bronco 2. Unless I remember wrong, it was stop, neutral, transfer case, carry on.

this new jeep unfortunately a lot more complicated, or maybe it’s my old age as shown with the 88 bronco.

So is it me? I’m used to the park. Neutral. Transfer. Carry on. This says drive at either 0 or 45, transfer while in motion and if will engage faster if you are actively acceleratin, but also to be sure to not accelerating during the transfer. So what is it?

how do I “properly“ use this supposedly spiffy system with off road + that has bs instruction and all of these other gadgets.

I feel like I need a pre ecu vehicle to actually enjoy just mudding.

cn someone break it down to me Barney style as to how this madness works, what makes it easier, and have I just screwed up and purchase a brand new rubicon that has maybe too many buttons for my everly dimming mental status.

obligatory photos attached jut because this massive wall of text but I need help. I’d hate to think I should’ve went with a ,averick or a deal Cruz or whatever lol

DailyMoparGuy has it right. Shift into 4hi can be done anytime you’re moving leas than 45mph, just take your foot off the skinny pedal and pull the t-case shifter to 4hi. To go to 4lo, just be rolling slow, shift transmission to neutral, then pull t-case shifter straight through N to 4lo. Once it engages, you can shift back to D. You CAN go into 4lo while sitting still in neutral, but it may take more than one try before it actually engages.

Ever tried shifting into 4wd while your front tires are moving slower than the rear tires? It’s nasty.

The cable and transfer case are really tight when brand new. Once it all starts to wear in it’ll go in and out of 4H and 4L like butter. Just keep practicing the steps everyone has already outlined.

You sound like those old people that their kids have to buy them a Jitterbug big button cell phone to bring them into the modern age.

Good advice has already been given. It is not that big of a deal once you figure and try it out. Be glad you do not have manual hubs to deal with also.

Think of shifting into 4H as being the same as way back in the day when you rode a 10 speed bicycle. You didn't peddle hard while you were trying to shift gears....right? Same principle. Don't load up the driveline while trying to shift gears.

I think the Jeep lever style transfer case is rather old-school and easy to use. My first Jeep was a 1990 XJ Cherokee, followed by 3 more XJ's and my 04 TJ Rubicon and now my JT Rubicon as well. Shifting the transfer case has used the same method through the years. What really screwed me up was trying to get a Ford Ranger with a push button selector into 4 low. Doesn't work like a Jeep at all. Believe it had to stop in park, then neutral with foot on brake to get it engaged.

I have a 2022 Mojave, I can shift into 4hi but seems go past a stop and I can't shift out unless I stop a put the trans in neutral than I can shift out of 4hi.
Do I need a cable adjustment?

Do I need a cable adjustment?
Or more pressure on the shifter.

The first 4WD vehicle I had was a 1970 International Harvester Scout Aristocrat. It was real old school - VERY stiff transfer case shifter and locking hubs on the front axle (really wish I still had that Scout…). The next one was/is a 1983 GMC S-15 Jimmy (that we ordered and bought new). Still have it, and it has a very easy to shift transfer case, along with being the first that could be shifted into 4H while moving. Also have a 2017 Renegade (yes, I know it’s a Fiat in Jeep bodywork) with 4WD that’s more like AWD. It does function much better than expected, but I miss having the H/L option. Had a couple of other 4WD vehicles that really aren’t that unique or memorable.

Now have a 2021 Gladiator Rubicon, and I have learned a couple of interesting points. First, it won’t shift into 4L if the front wheels are turned any significant amount - I find that a bit annoying TBH. Next is that I have a manual transmission, so it actually helps to be in Neutral with the clutch disengaged to shift into 4L. Shifting into 4H while moving works well, though I haven’t done it at any speed above ~25 mph. Transfer case shifter is still very stiff, but otherwise it works well.

Just some rambling from nearly half a century of 4WD ownership…
