Rockslide engineering step slider tooling marks anyone noticed this?

Don't mean to hijack this thread but I am planning on installing mine this weekend. Any tips outside of what has been mentioned in the install guide.

- Longest breaker bar you can get. DO NOT USE AN IMPACT WRENCH!!!
- Torch the body bolts for a good minute
- Have at it with the bolts, 1/4 turns back and forth
- If you feel binding, torch the bolt again for a good minute
- Back to 1/4 turns back and forth (you may have to repeat this until you can back these out with a normal ratchet)
- A second pair of hands would be nice

Yep. Patience is key. Watch some youtube on panel removal if you haven't done it on the JT before - the panels don't pop off in the way I would have expected.

I did not have to use a breaker bar on mine, but I did have to file down the threads closest to the heads on 4 of my bolts - no pattern on which ones needed it, some just did.

Lining up the weather-stripping was tough. I used painter's tape to spot where I wanted the upper edge of the adhesive to go and used it as a guide.

I used a creeper chair to help line it all up on install, probably could have gotten away with doing it myself using that but I was grateful for an extra pair of hands at that point.

3m aluminum oxide Roloc disc on a pneumatic angle grinder is what I use. Removes marks like that in seconds.

It doesn't though... it just smooths out the transition which means you now have an uneven surface. There is no added filler here so inevitably if you remove metal it has to come from somewhere. You can grind down the ridge from machining, but it will leave an uneven surface which powder still won't hide.

I mean you bought sacrificial armor, not a show piece.

Now I have another question. Is this the steps themselves, or the accessory armor that some people add? I don’t have the additional armor. I was hoping to avoid more weight. If I find that I’m hitting them enough, I can always add it.

The armor is extra. You install the steps, drill out the company logo on the front, add the armor with rivets and bolts on the bottom, then, in stall new company logo. Once you put the armor on, the steps are pretty heavy, and I use a scaffolding system to service them - 4 jack stands and wood between them to slide them on and off.
I do recommend the armor for the reason that if you bend the sliders near the step, you can damage the step entry and exit hole. If that happens, get the grinder and touch up paint and reform the entry, exit hole. With the armor, there is a lot less chance of bending the sliders, you mostly just scratch them. In addition, the rivets on the armor can easily be drilled out, and the armor taken back in for powder coating, or replacement.
Even though they are super thick, without the armor, if you drop the truck on a big boulder, you can dent the sliders.

I had mine for a while now, they are great. Everyone loves them, and nobody complains about how high my truck is. They are fantastic protection for the JT.

I know it’s extra. I opted to start without it, primarily to save on weight. On 33’s and factory rubicon suspension I only touched the rock rails once. It’s much less likely now with 3.5” of lift (3 in front, 4+ in rear) and 37” tires. The $700 price for armor is pretty steep as well. I may add them someday, but I choose my lines pretty carefully.

They are rock sliders......not museum pieces !!

I think they're cool but probably the most overpriced accessory I've ever seen!

They’re rock sliders without the extra as well. I’ve talked to people that have used them as pivot points without the extra armor. It’s true that you “could” hit a rock perfectly to damage the step, but you’d really have to be lined up perfectly on a pointy rock. These are really solid. Prior to getting these, I’ve slid sideways into rocks on the paper thin rubicon rails and didn’t even dent them. These make those look like sheet metal.

Exactly! Everyone is different in their level of tolerance. Not sure I would call that petty. Just different opinion.
