I’m still running 40s successfully on my stock housing. I did end up swapping to 5.38 gears. Those feel really good.
Biggest weakness I’ve seen so far is they beat up your suspension bushings. If you are off-roading a lot, expect to do a rebuild every couple years. That’s on RK’s suspension. Takes an afternoon if you have a press and a vice.
On my JTRD, I’m running 40” Cooper Discovery on stock Dana 44s front (RCV 300mm solid CV shafts, 4.56 Revolution Gears, Artec trussed and gussetted front, PSC steering), stock rear, Adam front and rear driveshafts, all on KMC Riots 17x9 (-18).
A group of us just completed a cross country trip in August from Virginia to California‘s Rubicon Trail, back through Colorado; the JTRD did well beyond my expectations. I’ll fix things as they break, but I’ll keep having fun until they do!
