Is anyone aware if stellantis is using cheaper parts in jeeps etc..

I mean I’m sure they cut corners where they can… like the ball joints have plastic in them at this point iirc.

But even then, compare the front end of our Jeep with any older Jeep model even compare to what’s being made by other OEM’s and we have some of the most robust suspension and steering set ups out there out of the box… even more so in a Mojave or Diesel flavor. In terms of axles, these aren’t your mom and dad’s Dana 44’s, these are pretty robust and it takes what any reasonable person would consider to be abuse for a failure.

Things like the Pentastar tick make me think that they are using cheaper stuff in some areas, anyway….it feels like something all automakers are doing though…if you read, all the car makers are having issues. It may may not be cheaper components as much as it is efforts to save weight and comply with fuel economy standards.

I spoke to the owner of a Jeep rental outfit in Moab after they had been renting JL´s for awhile. I asked how they held up compared to the JK. The guy told me the JK´s were good, but with larger tires and the abuse of a rental, the front axle housings and parts of the front suspension were prone to breakage. They were running mostly 35´s on the JK´s with some with 37´s. They had to do a lot to beef them up for the 37´s because breakage was a sure thing.

He said the JL´s were holding up exponentially better with 37´s on all of them. He said they had no issues at all with the axle housings and the suspension part breakage was not common. He said it was a much better Jeep.

I´m not sure if they´ve cheapened anything since, but I´ve spent much time underneath my JL and now my JT and I see no differences in anything. All the stock front suspension parts look exactly the same. I´m sure there might be some minor differences and spec differences that are not visible to the naked eye, but I don´t feel like they´ve cheapened or weakened anything.

My JL is on 35´s and has had 3 trips to Moab and a bunch to many, many other places. I am running 35´s and have had no issues. At almost 100,000 miles the ball joints still feel like they always have. I watch those closely because I will replace them at the drop of a hat if necessary.

My JK had ball joints upgraded to Synergy at about 93k miles. The originals were still serviceable, but I could feel that they had slop in them. That JK did a lot of off-roading, but not as much or as hard as the JL.

I ran 33´s on the JK to avoid breaking things, and other than wearing out ball joints, it never broke or bent a suspension part in 193k miles. The guys I see broken down on the trail with suspension or axle failures usually have on JK´s, 35´s or larger and on JL´s, larger than 38´s. I have not seen a JL or JT have an issue with 37´s on them. Still, I´m sticking with 35´s for safety margin.

I did move to 35´s just before I sold the JK. Only because I got a set of Kenda AT´s for $80 each. I ran 33´s to avoid what the rental guy called the ¨JK Smile¨. That is a bent front axle housing. Lol.

But yeah, the door nets are the cheapest of shit. Lol.

The jk ball joints did as well.
I thought that might be to reduce maintanence. All the aftermarket ball joints require greasing intervals.

"Cheaper" is an amalgamous term. Stellantis is not any different than any other car maker in that they squeeze their suppliers for cost considerations but at the end of the day, they still are suppose to meet the minimum specifications they set forth regardless. So unless you know if Stellantis is lowering the bar for minimum acceptance, that only leaves the supplier to cut corners to make it "cheaper" but they risk losing long term gains for a short term consideration and most will not risk that.
