We are going to be seeing a "why I sold my Gladiator video" after this Alaska trip :) I hope he doesn't get stranded.
Maybe…. But these influences have to change and purchase vehicles frequently to keep the attention of the non fanatic masses.

From their description of the problem and what causes it - it makes it sound inevitable. It's not a matter of "if" but "when" the teflon coating wears off that rocker arm. And when that happens - it's just a few hundred miles later you throw a CIL.

Yet, I also hear about people with over 100K on their engines without this problem.

So, what are your thoughts? Is this the inevitable end to every Gladiator motor? Are we all driving ticking time bombs? (pun intended)

I equate it to "What came first, chicken or the egg". Did the cam wipe the rocker arm or the rocker arm wipe the cam? Not saying they are wrong but do we know they are right? I throw their speculation on the pile with all the other theories.

That's low mileage for an engine these days. From what I hear, the rest of the engine lasts hundreds of thousands of miles (like it should).

I have met Brad. He is a good guy. He has had several problems with his Jeeps and sold many. I am about to do that also. How do you justify the thousands of cams on backorder and thousands of people waiting for them? Add that to all the other issues with the JT, steering, frame, trans reverse clunk, and the list go\es on. I wanted to keep it for several years but now I am re thinking that. He is having a non dealer do the repair to get it done sooner. I wonder if it would even be covered under warranty with all his mods.

People Work?
For those that do not want to watch Brad yammer about everything else besides the engine, go to the 10:25 mark and he will actually talk about the problem.

The link I posted is supposed to automatically queue to the garage talking about the cam issue.

Tree farmer now. Retired first responder.
I haven't checked online for solutions because I don't have any ticking issue with my 3.6 Pentastar in my 2021 JTM. 4 years young, and 66,000 miles so far. Mostly long-haul highway miles from CA to WI and AZ and such.

I have friends with 3.6 Pentastars in commercial RAM vans that get as much as 300,000 miles out of them.

I had ticking 2.5 and 4.0's in Tj's and YJ's but it was just noise. Piston slap, as they said. Not catastrophic failure. That's just what they do.

So, my question is: Are these 3.6 engines grenading, or just thowing engine lights? Or what? Leaving folks stranded on the highway at 3PM in the desert in the summer with mom and baby in arms because the Jeep just quit running? Seriously.

Or is it a ticking sound and someone thinks it sucks? "Dealer, fix it, it's under warranty."

Please enlighten me. Are we struggling with a nat, and swallowing a camel? To fix a non-issue?

Thousands of cams on back order? Can one of you Jeep employees verify that? Seriously.

I like"Brad" and have watched his TrailRecon YT channel a long time. I think that he is a good fellow and very similar to myself.

But shock videos sell. Just sayin.

Show me a 3.6 Pentastar complete failure because of cam or rocker issues. Seeing the supposed thousands of cams on backorder there must be at least 100's of videos or testimonies of complete engine failure due to 'ticking' cam or rockers in the 3.6.

I am serious and open minded about this.

Be Well. Jeep on.

Eric

I hope not. We can do some things that have potential to help like changing to
1. 5w20 or 5w30 oil and doing changing oil every 5K.
2. Some type of decent fuel additives i still believe in them. Do a clean with a product like chevron every 4k to 6k miles.
3. Baxter's performance oil filter adaptor that can help prevent dry start up. Added benefit is easy oil change
4. A good catch can

Am sure people have other ideas.

It seems like the best solution if you have this issue and don't want to wait for a camshaft is to find a salvage motor or do a V8 conversion. Man I would be so pissed!

In my neck of the woods it´s common to see Pentastars with 300,000+ miles with no issue. It is not inevitable and not even likely. There are well over 14,000,000 of these engines produced at this point. It could even be over 16,000,000 by now.

I´m at 103k on my JL. It runs perfectly like new. I´ll be changing spark plugs, belt, and idler pulley soon, but no issues. Just oil changes so far.
