Is this the last Jeep you'll ever own?

No, I have a 1997 TJ in the garage. I will keep that and have no plans on letting go of it; something breaks and I head to JeepForum and find the fix.

This will be the last electronics-laden car I would buy. I just don't have the toolset to figure out what is going wrong. USB not working, no codes, where do you start... parts canyon would be my only weapon at this point.

Its more than likely a fuse .. go to auto zone.. oh and check your phone cord. I had a brand new cord thought the jack quit but turned out to be a faulty brand new phone cord. It even fried my charger in the 115 jack before I figured out the problem the cord had a short in it.

check your phone cord
This…I’ve been so pissed a few times when my phone stops working thinking it’s the vehicle breaking and it’s just the stupid cord. However that seems like the least of your concerns. But given all you have been through just fix the crap and get rid of it…who cares about depreciation, vehicles for the last 120 years (minus stupid COVID insanity) depreciated. Personally I’d get into a Tacoma TRD Off Road with a manual and call it a day. I hate 4 bangers in midsize trucks but that’s just the world we live in…TBH I also shuttered when Ford went V6TT in full size pickups and now look how many have those or will soon. Just remember that you will have issues no matter what you choose. I had to replace my transmission in my ‘10 Tundra with only 8,000 miles. It was covered but still just shows nothing is perfect. Hell Toyota right now is having issues with the V6TT in their Tundra and LX600 requiring full on engine replacements. The older 4Runners are dependable relics but the 5 speed AT is utterly preposterous and downright terrible.

Found out later it is a known issue. How the ?F?
Hasn't been a problem for me. So I don't think it's a known issue.

Good luck on any new vehicle not being electronic laden.

He's trying to buy a 5th gen 4runner, not the current 6th gen. Of course they ran that same design for 15 years so it's got 2010 levels of electronics. Still won't run or shift without computers and sensors all functioning, but it's about as low tech as you can still buy new.

I wouldn’t mind a 2012 Land Cruiser at all.

And most of their product line was super dated and super boring, leading to boring buyers who don't expect any level of performance and certainly aren't pushing the vehicle.
This. After a year on the Tacoma forums it was clear that most Toyota owners don't have high expectations and are fine with mediocre to poor performance.

He's trying to buy a 5th gen 4runner, not the current 6th gen. Of course they ran that same design for 15 years so it's got 2010 levels of electronics.
Also this. Toyota has great reliability because they wait for other manufactures to perfect something first, then 5 years later they release it in their vehicles. Then they run that platform for many years with minimal changes.

Great vehicles if you don't have high expectations and just want to drive from A to B. Also great for resale. Not great if you like modern tech and feel, or when you look at what you're getting for the price you'll pay compared to the competition.

After owning a 3rd gen Taco I dont understand how they are so popular with the off road crowd. They are grossly underpowered and under geared, transmissions perform horribly, you have to cut/move body mounts to fit 33's, c-channel frame that twists if you run over a zip tie, electronic FAD inevitably fails, can't see shit from the drivers seat...

Just to wrap this up (sorry to those who are bored), the Jeep Gladiator is running like a top, all issues I had with it are either fixed (second starter worked like a charm) or figured out (turn the heat up really high and you don't need to worry about it dumping cold air). So I am very happy to trade it in and I won't have to worry about the next guy buying it; it will be great for them I am sure.

I ended up buying the 2025 Land Cruiser 1958... call me crazy but along with Toyota's backing and support for their products, they seemed to have built a good overlander on a body/frame. Lots of electronics too, but as you guys have told me there is no getting away from that.

Admittedly, the JTR was and is a much more capable beast of a machine, but our needs have changed since we moved out of Colorado to the gunshine state. We should be able to travel to the west in comfort and when we get there attempt some of the tamer trails like the Alpine Loop and some of the runs near Death Valley.

Enjoy, different strokes for different folks as they say. I would never own a Toyota, but the 1958 Land Cruiser is sharp looking, way better than the other trim levels. My buddy had a 4Runner and we wheel together with Tacos, Wranglers, Gladiators, Samurai, etc. I am down to run trails with whoever in whatever as long as they are competent, or a newbie willing to listen and learn. I hope it serves you well and is trouble free, post up some pics of it if you get a chance!
