What you are doing wrong is driving an aerodynamic brick and being concerned about MPG. If fuel economy is a concern, you bought the wrong vehicle.
I wouldn't fuel efficiency in general is a concern. Obviously I chose the jeep life for a reason. But I would still like to maximize what is available to me and keep it comparable with the JKU I was driving before.

Aerodynamic brick? Which part is aerodynamic?

the gasser gets better mileage in the 3k-5k range

The diesel in mind increased around 7000 miles

I think it's the 4.10 gears. My mom's Rubicon mpg is considerably lower than mine and my wife's non Rubicon JT's. My wife's stock gears and 35's around 19, my 5. 13's on 37's is around 16, and mom's bone stock Rubicon is around 14-15.

For you I hope your one of the few Gladiator owners getting MPG’s in the mid 20’s. What I have experienced is an average of 13.5 to 14 mpg’s with mostly in town driving. I have seen 20 mpg’s on trips with solid freeway driving. I didn’t notice any increase in mpg’s following brake in. I am now at 30k miles.

Are you hand calculating or looking at the dash gauge? My dash gauge is off by 2mpg every time. I don't know of a way to correct it. On my F-150 there was a way to go into the settings and correct it so it was accurate for you vehicle to match your hand calculations.

Hi all. I recently moved up from a 2014 JKU Sahara with the 6 speed manual to a 2024 JT Rubicon with the 6 speed manual. Given that the advertised fuel efficiency is within 1-2 MPG of each other I was expecting about the same MPG. But where I was getting about 16.5-17 average (80% city driving), my Gladiator is getting me 13-13.5 doing the same driving.

Is the engine break in period affecting the MPG? Is it the mud tires? Is it how I am driving it? I would be ok with a slight drop but an almost 20% drop off in my MPG in a car that is advertised as MORE fuel efficient is a little worrying to me.
Hand calculated miles or EVIC? Mine has never close to what the EVIC says. Sometimes as much as 2 MPG +/- difference from hand calculation. Right now I'm sitting at 15.4 MPG (Fuelly app) with some towing in the last several months and living in hill country at 7,000' in elevation. JTR auto with Rocktrix 116 wheels (lightweight) and 35 inch AT tires.

I'm driving about 40-50 MPH mostly to and from work. Some days I hit more stoplights than others but not many. Rarely get on the freeway.
That's why you get lower gas mileage. Most of my driving is on the highway going around 75+ MPH for an hour or more. When I drive in the city, the gas mileage drops.

You can test it out yourself. Go for a cruise this weekend on the highway and check your mpg while doing so. You'll see the difference.

But if you look at the first post, the OP says
my Gladiator is getting me 13-13.5 doing the same driving.
So he's expecting the same mileage.

I think the OP needs to lower his mpg expectations for city driving. It's a Jeep and not meant to have higher mpg like all the other pavement princesses on the road.

He'll probably see a little better mpg once he has 4 - 6k miles on the engine.

Sounds a little low but not outrageous…. I’m getting about 14mpg in hilly PA in my 2020 Gladiator manual with 37” AT tires at 29psi, 5.13 gears, a heavier Centerforce clutch and flywheel and over 800lbs of extra steel and stuff - bumper, winch, rock rails, armor, topper, slide out, tools. I’ve gotten 15.6 mpg - calculated by hand on my trip from PA to Yellowstone and back and that was loaded with camping gear, fishing gear and my son. Was seeing 11mpg in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho and 17mpg in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio. My evic is +/- 0.5 mpg.

2021 Rubicon with the stock Falken AT's and the 8 speed. Tooling around town, I get 18-19 MPG (I'm rural). If I'm heading to fire calls a lot, it drops to 17 MPG. Longer trips I can get it up to 21-23 MPG keeping it below 70 MPH.

I bought it with 3670 miles on it and I'm at 25K now. Mileage is still pretty consistent.

They can get decent mileage but you do have to work at it. I suspect the tonneau cover isn't hurting things despite what the Mythbusters said.

I'm getting 16 mpg in town, 4.10 gears and 8 speed. I'm happy with city economy, but so far, hwy economy sucks. I only have 600 miles on it so far.

My Mojave gets 16-17mpg in town. Depending on wind direction I have gotten anywhere from 8-20mpg on the highway. 8-speed automatic though. A couple of weeks ago I managed 18mpg running 80mph for one tank of gas on the way to south Texas.
