Early Gladiators didn’t have many options for bed hauling and I was stuck with some extra time during COVID so I made my own setup based around a free bedrack I got from my B-In-law.Hadn’t bought lumber since the apparent apocalypse-driven price increase. Pretty pricey right now!
And thanks. Few more things I’d like to do to the truck but definitely love it. Looks like you’re running bed cover and rack for bikes? Using the KB Voodoo mounts or something else? I like being able to roll up the cover and have the entire bed available, so thinking those are the only mounts to go with?
Yes Voodoo is one offering now but check out bed-rack forum for more options.
I decided to go my route after using hitch mount bike rack for my mountain bikes. Someone almost rear ended me
In traffic which would have taken out my expensive bike. So I put it in the bed and had to have tailgate down to fit mountain bikes (they have Maxels so no front axle quick release).
So ?, how to carry my mountain bikes safely, carry 16ft lumber for home projects (I agree lumber is so ridiculously priced now) kayaks, my 7ft Yakima Sky Box and make the bed useful and secure with the locking tailgate.
With current set up I can carry at the same time, 2 kayaks, 4 bikes, 7’ Yakima Sky Box and secure everything in the bed in rolling totes currently (building drawers eventually) in the truck. If I need to haul my dirt bike, 4 wheelers get mulch etc I have a trailer for that. All of the bike mounts are
Attached with Yakima gutter mount spacers I took off of mounts, this holds the cross bars vertically on bed. I made steel spacers to lift bars a bit to get bike mounts attached to bars on a hard plywood cover painted with medium texture deck paint. Under the plywood I added steel plates with drilled holes to spread out the load on the 3/4” plywood for the mounted bikes.
I have about $250 in this build (I already had all of the Yakima Stuff except the Sky Box which I paid $100.00 bucks for off of FB and it came with Yakima cross bars and SUV roof rack mounts not used for this project but was a deal! ) The ladder rack was free and I cut to lower cross bars to match the attached Yakima gutter mount bar on the cab. One year later, thousands of miles carrying stuff, it still works great and bed cover is sealed so no water gets in.
I made side mount brackets to carry bikes outside of tack for my eventual roof top tent addition.
