I am looking at purchasing a trailer to tow while I am overlanding. I am looking at the Coachman/Forest River Viking or Clipper 9.0 TD Off Road Pkg. First question is anyone towing one of these? If not, what are you towing behind your JT's. Very interested to know.

I have been towing a 9.0TD for a couple on years now. Our longest trip was from Michigan to NYC then to northern Vermont and New Hampshire.
Very easy towing. Hardly felt it back there ( except for the gas MPG! I get about 16MPG when towing. it. My trailer has been highly modified and has had some weight added to it, though I did remove the AC and Refer. I set it up for off grid camping.

We have a really basic Hiker Mid-Range that is surprisingly capable and very lightweight. Took it out West last summer for a 6,000 mile trip (behind a JL at the time) did White Rim Trail near Moab, then into Bryce, Capitol Reef, Escalante, Grand Canyon and Colorado. Good mix of dirt and pavement. Planning an 11k mile trip up to the Yukon and Alaska next year behind the JTR!

I would love to see the modifications you made. We will be giving it a good test for the next couple weeks. We are going overlanding the Idaho BDR.

Custom awning mount for the new 270 awning is done and on. It should be great. Haven’t camped since the upgrades yet. I’m itching to test it out. Without a forward spot for the tension line that won’t interfere with the open tent, I added a single pole to allow me to attach the tension line at a down angle without pulling on the awning arm. It fits in the shade cover, so no big deal.

We also tow an off road roof top tent trailer. Smittybilt Scout. It’s been fantastic, and it goes wherever the Jeep can. 12” of clearance with 32” tires, independent a arm suspension with two shocks, 1 spring, and limiting straps per wheel. It will fit 37’s without clearance issues. Matching 5x5 lug pattern if you want to share the spare as a second one with the Jeep.

I like that trailer. What did you use to mount the tent system, just plywood ( I would assume marine grade) or sheet metal. Im thinking a sheet of 1/4" aluminum. Do you happen to know the clearance of the slider to the compartment. I looked on the website with no info, I am looking at a remote reefer to put on there. Looks like you have a fairly tall one on there. Thanks

Just picked up my Gladiator so no pics yet with it. This model is really popular for mods - see quite a few Jeep (Gladiator) owners on the FB forum. It's an Intech Flyer Pursue - all aluminum welded frame - I've got the AC, Heat and Maxxair fan and slideout stove\frig combo. Lots of conversions for solar, shower, etc. Priced reasonably as well.

Here is our setup. Super lightweight. This is a Dinoot trailer (https://compactcampingstore.com/products/dinoot-m-series-tub-kits) that I picked up used from an aircraft maintenance tech in Florida. He meticulously built it out, even using the same flooring they use as the floor in an airplane fuselage. It is built on a heavy duty harbor freight trailer frame. It has upgraded leaf springs and a 3500 lb axle. I added the tongue box with an AGM battery to power lights, charge things etc. I added a trickle charger to the box so you only have to plug in an extension cord to the box to recharge the battery.

Unloaded I can move this trailer around by hand. Even loaded I can move it around, although it takes a little more effort. You can see the size comparison with my LJ in the picture. We carry plenty of fire wood, a camping box, a kitchen box, a coleman grill, chairs, table and 5 gallons of water. Still plenty of room in the box for other things as well.

Would I trust it on offroad trails? Probably not without welding more support into the frame (but you can buy a heavier frame from Dinoot). We have had it on plenty of forest service roads with no issues. Tows fine as well.
