What tools to carry?

I carry a Craftsman socket set in a soft carry case I picked up at Lowe’s (I liked that it had some of the bigger socket sizes needed to do some of the work on the jeep) and I also keep a pouch of deep sockets - 22mm needed for the lugs and an Icon metric set from Harbor Freight. Aside from that I keep a few basic things and probably my favorite, but pricey, tool is the Knipex adjustable wrench. That things opens up huge to get to just about most things on the jeep.

And it all tucks nicely away behind the rear driver side seat.

I like the soft case way more than the usual blow-molded junk. +1 for Knipex! I love those wrenches but trying to convince people they aren't pliers gets old.

Thanks to your guys tips here’s where I’m at.
had to order an oil filter socket bought some pliers to keep my good ones in the shop. Found a flex head extending 3/8 at Walmart.
Little of this, some stuff I had laying around.
You’re right that tool roll is awesome!

Do you have an adapter 3/8 to 1/2 and 1/2 to 3/8? With these you can cut down on number of extensions needed too.
If you carry a High-Lift jack you have a cheater bar already and on early Jeeps a sleeve for steering linkage.... been there done that twice at least. One of my High-Lift jack handles is slightly flattered to fit 12 in Crescent adjustable wrench. Not a lot of places to use High-Lift jack on new Jeeps in regular fashion though.

There are some wrench and socket sizes that there is no need to have. Then there are some that are a must have. That's the list I want. I don't want everything, just the right stuff. Like a flat fix set, hope to never use it but take it.

I carry this set plus a breaker bar with lugnut sized socket. Also have a tire plug kit and compressor.

That adapter thing is a good tip.
I don’t have a high lift, yet. Just got the truck 450 miles ago lol.

Valve cores. They take up almost no space at all and can save a trip.

In addition to the previous posts, I carry some of my Dewalt cordless tools with two 5amh batteries:
- sawsaw / reciprocating, for wood, logs, etc.
- multitool / oscilating tool for cutting metal, plastic, etc.
- impact wrench and sockets
- standing flashlight
- normal drill and bits

After power tools, I have:
- magnet bowl
- tie down racket straps
- bungee cords
- zip ties from small to extra large (2 feet)
- small shovel
- first aid kit
- high visibility vest
- hammer
- battery jumper cables
- 18w solar battery trickle charger
- cargo net for the truck bed
- 3-ton bottle jack
- a couple of extra 2x6" pieces of wood as platforms (if needed for the bottle jack)
- rachet and screwdriver set.

In my JK, I carry just about everything except the kitchen sink. I have a full set on 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2" metric sockets, shallow and deep well, a tool roll with 8-22mm wrenches with the HF set of gear wrenches. A Gearwrench 1/4" stubby set for the driveshafts, various pliers, screwdrivers and a pipe wrench. When wheeling I have 1/4 and 1/2" impacts, angle grinder and drill with drill bits. I also carry a 10" Ryobi chain saw with 6 4AH batteries. I have a 12V and a 110V Ryobi battery charger in the MH which does nothing on the trail but does charge batteries when back at camp. There is also a Craftsman sockets from 20mm-36mm for the axle nuts.

The JT has a Channellock 200PC mechanics tool set in the bed and a Kolbalt mini set under the back seat.

Both have Gorilla tape, electrical tape, zip ties and wire in various wire gauges and of course an assortment of ratchet straps, a tarp and bungie cords.

I have used the angle grinder on the trail way more than the drill which I wouldn't have expected.

To the above good ideas, add 15/16" 6-point socket for the oil filter cap, 18 mm socket for skid plates to frame, etc. and 13/16" socket for trans mount to crossmember. As above, add odd sizes needed for aftermarket stuff you installed. In a number of instances, metric and US sizes are very close, such as 11 mm vs 7/16, 19 mm vs 3/4, 16 mm vs. 5/8. I carry a racing aluminum floor jack and a bottle jack, 22 mm socket for lug nuts.

The only way to have enough is to bring the whole garage. Other than some common issues, it's usually something that you needed on the trail but they're in your home tool box ?

I came here looking for exactly this 411.

I think that EDCs would/will change based on level of build also; as stock won't need some tools that a modded rig with adjustable arms may need, etc. Although, it may be worth carrying some extra tools in case someone in the group or even a stranger may need some help.

I'm considering picking up some Harbor Freight ICON tools for myJTR EDC. I've always been a name brand tool guy, but these days it seems that many tools have caught up while names like Craftsman might not be as good as yesteryear.

For close to 35 yrs I've been carrying an old Metwrench set which has been nothing shy of amazing.
Each socket/wrench is SAE/Metric in 1 and I think even working in a shop; I've only had a handful of bolts/nuts that rounded so bad the tool didn't work.

Issue is, now it's only sold in Europe and a small box is close to $350-400 delivered.
