Mine was usually the alternator that caught fire. It finally caught fire while moving it from Oregon to South Dakota. We towed it to a jeep lot and bought our JK. My cousin is a mechanic and lived nearby so he picked it up and got it running. He sold it to a guy who wanted to do an engine swap. He stored it in a barn. The barn mysteriously caught fire with the jeep in it. Ultimately she died how she lived, on fire.My 88 YJ had a nice char mark under the hood from the factory carb. Once I upgraded to a Motorcraft carb it solved the problems with backfiring/fires.
