I'm hoping to pick up my Sarge green Sport S the end of this month.
I'm thinking about switching the wheels for all Mopar steel spare wheels and painting them the Sarge green.
Question is, do I go glossy sheen and match the body, or more of a satin/dull for that military look?

Satin or even matte, and powder coat NOT paint.

If you paint them you will be touching them constantly.
Good point. Thanks!

Powder coat them.

I see people saying power coat but I have never seen powder coat that doesn't flake off.

Also if powder coating over stock wheels would you do the whole thing or just the front?

They will coat the entire wheel. A local shop here charges $100.00 per wheel

Sarge Green Willys here, I opted for gloss powder. I'd never have wheels painted if powder was an option. There is a huge difference between the powder coating quality you'd find on mass produced aftermarket parts and what you get from a dedicated powder coating shop. Powder coating has always happened to be a cheaper option for me as well. I think the local auto-body & paint shops don't like taking on small painted wheel projects off the street so they inflate their price. Powder coating shops (with full prep, stripping existing coat, smoothing out blems etc.) is usually $65 to $80 per wheel depending on how many stages. Sarge is a single stage.

Keep in mind that gloss (or even a semi gloss) will power wash down to a shine where-as matte will take scrubbing to get that last bit of film/grime off. Gloss also strengthens the final result and lastly, if you add a layer of ceramic before mounting, everything rinses off. I've been sunken in slop above my sliders and no problem rinsing off.

Also, plan on running a full-size spare so you can get a 5th coated at the same time and grab anything else you'd like to have coated.

Affirmative, they will dip/strip the entire wheel and shoot it all. They'll use silicon plugs on the valve stem and inner lug holes before baking.

My vote is matte/satin green and paint them yourself if you wanna save money. My steel wheels were powdercoated black from the manufacturer and I just spray painted them bronze. After 4 years there are only a few small chips that almost every one of them came from dropping the lug nuts on them when rotating tires. It has been surprisingly durable.

Now my front bumper on the other hand has required a number of touch ups lol...

I went with powder coat for durability. Paint would be easily touched up though. I have gouged the powder coat off on rocks. I haven't bothered to try and touch them up.

Love the wheels! I was wondering how you found deep dish steel wheels as I was not able to find any before buying mine...but then I read your other thread on how Wheel Vintiques custom made them for you. Mine are 17x8 US Wheel Rat Rod with 4.5" backspacing and have almost no lip lol.

Awesome stuff man!

Cheers

If you powder them touching up will be a nightmare...I find the touching-up part a plus not a negative. If you paint properly you wont have to touch up near as much as some might think. Its also a crap shoot on the quality of the job and there are stories on the heat used during powder changing the strength of the wheel.

I vote satin powder coat (from a reputable shop).

If the process isn't done correctly, you'll get flaking hence a reputable shop.
