Hey all,

Just curious as to what made you go diesel over the 3.6? Occupation? Trails? Residency? Overlanding? Tell your story!
This is my forth diesel power vehicle, so you might say that the 442 pound feet of torque and 28mpg on the highway, says it all. The thought of my Gladiator with the 3.6 from the Pacifica minivan was not gonna happen.

Yes it’s about torque. I also tow and not looking for engine that causes gear hunting. If I did not have a towing need I would have probably gone gas.

Cuz… diesel!!!! Seriously drove all sorts of gassers over the last 20 years from i4 to v10 to H4s to turbos of many versions . Got my first diesel two years ago “ Colorado zr2 “
Saw the eco had more hp and tq then the baby max even post tune. Said yup I’ll take one of those !!
I tow a fair amount in the summer and I also have a long commute so tq and mpg win for me.

I might have chosen a diesel or maybe not, but it wasn't an option at the time so I've got a gasser. I never wish I had something different, that's for sure.

That said, I do like the fact that they now offer diesel as an option. I think that some people who wouldn't have otherwise bought a JT now have one because of it. This thread is evidence of that.

I agree. It seems people need the diesel and they wouldn't have gone gladiator without it. I wonder how many diesel owners went gladiator over a bigger truck with a diesel like a Ram that could do more?

Did any owner go diesel gladiator and regret choosing a midsize versus a full size diesel? I guess I'm thinking the size of the vehicle could hamper what it can tow.

I have a manual sport s freedom because I don't tow. Went for that payload

Appreciate the responses. Love hearing people talk about their trucks!

For the Gladiator money, you can certainly get a 1500 and a darn nice one when spec'd correctly.

I didn't feel I had the need for a full size. With a full size truck comes full size problems, such as parking and u-turns, fuel economy isn't the greatest and only gets worse when you start to add bigger tires and make it look dope.

I do tow my boat, but off road a whole lot more often and the JT is up for that task. I used to to do with with a Nissan Xterra with no issues and the ecodiesel doesn't even care that its there - even on 37s.

The only thing that pains me on the JT is the cost. The interior is pretty small for the premium you pay, but we get by just fine with no complaints. I feel this way when using my buddy's 1500 for some road trips, but when we hit the trails in the JT again, I have no regrets.

That says it all! Isn't the diesel transmission made in Germany as well?
The Diesel's ZF 8HP 75 automatic transmission was designed here in Germany, but i do not know if this are only built in the SaarbrĂĽcken factory, it seems the 8HP is also assembled in Gray Court, SC.

The combination of mpg, power, and the inherent reliability of a diesel is what grabbed my interest. For instance, yesterday I was driving my gladiator with a rooftop tent and 35’s (with stock gearing), effortlessly towing a couple thousand pound trailer, and I had a bed full of construction material…all while getting well over 20mpg. Most other trucks are lucky to do that stock and unloaded. I guess I feel like the diesel can do more work, more efficiently, more comfortably, and for a longer time before a rebuild is needed than the gas engine.

I like the fact that when I press the go pedal, 0-30, it’s like the initial propulsion when a roller coaster takes off. It sits your butt/head right back in the seat. I run a neck brace like one of the trophy truck guys, due to past injury, never can be to careful. This thing rips!!! The 3.6 in my JK, couldn’t even touch the 3.0 ?

Purchased mine based on experience with our diesel Grand Cherokee. The GC worked flawlessly during the 54K miles And 28 mpg during ownership. JTRD fits the bill for me and let’s me take advantage of better mpg and off road capabilities.
