My friend just sent me this and asked why? (Its not my Jeep)

We have 4 Jeeps currently and Ive had several in the past, but....... I didn't have an answer.

So I pose the question to all of you...... WHY???? .... is there a roll bar running above the dash? It wouldn't help in a rollover and It now obstructs the already small windshield.

Some just like to show off, or perhaps try to convince others they are more clever, or because someone told them it would help and because they saw it on the internet, it must be true - and it's definitely cool because it's on the internet and someone on the internet did it - thus it's cool.
That's the rule. If it's on the web, and someone did it and posted a picture, then you MUST like it, you must tell them it's the best thing you've ever seen - you have to make them feel great. It's a rule of social mediocre.

Jeeps are among the safest things in a roll-over or flip-type accident I've ever seen.
I got my 4.0 out of a 94 Grand Cherokee that hit an embankment and flipped into the air, landing on the roof. Yes, the roof didn't have the nice sculptured shape to it, the sheet metal was flattened but the door frames, a-pillars, shape of the windshield, all were intact. The windshield was obviously shattered, but it wasn't "crushed" - in short, the sides and the roof did NOT cave in and the passenger cabin would have been roughly the same volume inside as it was originally.
I've seen cars flip like that - and my S-I-L's Blazer was one of those - where the A pillar was smashed down and the roof smashed down against the occupant.

I sure as heck hope no one here, including me or my family, ever find out how safe these are - but if something does happen - these are pretty tough vehicles.
All that said - what the heck was that person thinking - trying to protect against a side impact?
The shape of that bar is wrong for that.

Is it for accessories? Like mounting a phone. Gopro, etc.?
Yeah he's gotta have a heavy duty mount for the iPhone when out wheelin' like that. That's a pretty big dip there at the entrance to that parking lot, and the speed humps are brutal.

Looks bolted on. Could be a cross brace for an aftermarket roll cage which is bolted in. Seeing the red paint on the sides makes it look like there is more than just the cross bar.

Just a guess. If it’s not welded, maybe the cross brace is needed to make it structurally sound?

Looks like a Rock Hard sport cage.

I want to make something like that for accessories because nothing else seems to be good enough for a full-size iPad. The Rock Hard ones are just overbuilt for something like that though.

Good call. Does look like this thing. Huh, fits with the existing cage.

I’ve been running an 13” IPad Pro with the 67 Designs arm and one of the RAM mount iPad holders. It’s been plenty strong so far, if that helps.

My guess is its like stickers on a import, the more you have the faster they think they are.?
The more useless weight you can add to a Jeep the more Mall Crawling Street cred you get.

100% it is the Rock Hard Sport Cage. I'm sure it would have some benefit in a rollover; for those that need it, it is probably worth having, but probably overkill for most Jeep owners.

Post it up in your build thread! I've been thinking about an iPad mount set-up as I run GAIA on my iPad Pro.

Yeah I'm just getting too much flex out of my dash and the thing just shakes like hell... I've tried the Vector, 67 designs, and currently the RAM track and none have been great.

It's probably unnecessary for most users, but if you do really wheel hard and do really roll hard, it's important. Especially for a bolt-on cage that still ties into the body sheet metal. A really hard flop, or multiple rolls could compress the dash structure, thereby weakening the rest of the cage.

The bolt-on versions really impede visibility, and most people running a bolt-on cage probably aren't going into extreme enough positions to need it.

I built this cage on my old crawler several years ago and wanted to keep visibility impacts to a minimum. It required cutting the dash, but it was a toy so I didn't mind. This cage was tied to the frame at all six points as well.

I just threw up in my mouth a bit. That Jeep is pouting because it does not get to play in the dirt and rocks.
