Why did everyone decide their trim level (sport vs rubicon etc)?

I went round and round on deciding on the trim.
Mojave, Rubicon and Overland where never in the picture due to cost and realization of my needs.

At first I thought I wanted a Willys Sport, but after a test drive of a regular Sport, anything without power windows and locks was out.

I am an odd ball and didn't really want to replace my wheels & tires.
I knew I didn't want the all season minivan tires.
After a test drive of a Willys I learned that I also didnt want the MT tires either.

At the time the Sport S only came with the silver wheels and I really dont care for them.
Most I found also had the minvan tires too.

So either the Sport S or Willys would have to be priced to allow for tire and or wheels.

In the end I found an 80th for less than any Sport S I could find and much less than any Willys.
Love the looks, Love the interior, came with AT tires that are "good enough" for what I do and I like the wheels.
The 8.4 Uconnect is an OK bonus too, but I would never had paid extra for it.

I spent 7 years building my JKU sport. I've got two young kids now and don't have that much spare time any more. So I just bought a Rubi and wheel it as is for a mean time.

Diesel Rubi.

Reason for Diesel:
I wanted the most stump pulling power the factory could give me and the engine that could pull 3k~5k with the most ease.

Reason for Rubi:
I enjoy not manually disconnecting the sway bar. I had a teraflex link bend on an old Jeep, that was annoying and trying to get level enough to reconnect. I wanted the 4:1 for slow crawling and putting down the maximum torque to the ground. I’ll haul logs 3’+ diameter on the property and the lesser geared t-case worked a lot harder. 4:1 works much easier which means less breakage and less wear and tear.
The 4:1, in my experience, results in less breakage by being able to finesse an obstacle. Same with lockers, makes it point and shoot. I’ve owned open diff, lsd rear and lsd front and rear Jeeps before. I enjoy full selectable lockers. I rarely get in the mud/sand that requires 4lo with lots of wheel speed. I hate cleaning mud and avoid it.

Also, the aesthetics of the Rubi appeals to me. The Mojave was looked at, but I was able to get the diesel rubi cheaper.

Sport S MAX Tow. I needed it to pull my trailer and wanted to build it up as finances allowed. I wanted $'s to be spent on critical 4-wheel components on the outside, not fluff on the inside. I got mine to pull my off road camp trailer, my RTT and for the Badge of Honor trails. I wanted a convertible with easy on and off capabilities, and an interior I can just about hose out. I've said this before, I collect Trail Badges, not rubber ducks. What ever you use your JT for, I hope you enjoy every moment it gets driven. Next upgrade will be ARB Lockers, on at least the front. See ya on the trails.

I had a hard time deciding between a base Mojave with auto or the Sport S, Max Tow, LED package, popular equipment group, Alpine audio, hardtop, aux switches.

Sticker is about the same and I'm not as big of a fan of the Mojave hood as most are.

I went with the equipped Sport S as it's mostly going to be a road/ beach use vehicle and I kind of want the hard top more. I think buying a soft top will be easier if I want that later. .

I had two Rubicons already. One JKUR, and a JLUR. Never had the time to really offroad them as much as I would have liked. Never used the lockers, I do miss the e-disco, it was nice to use on the beach to smoothen the ride a bit. I didn't want to spend for stuff I wasn't going to use so I went with a Sport S with the Max Tow Package mainly for the 4.10 gears. Like the cloth heated seats too, they blow my wife's leather away.

Diesel Overland for me, I want towing and payload over the lockers of the Rubi. When True-Track comes out with a set for the Jeep I'll add those.

Mine really came down to a pricing snafu which they honored. I got a wicked good deal On an Overland. I probably would have bought the willys otherwise.

My mom died 2 years ago and told me she'd always wanted a new BMW but never let herself have one because it seemed an unwise use of money. Sitting on her death bed she realized she would never have regretted that now and told me to get a new truck for myself when my sister and I sold her house. I told her I would but still thought I'd go the used route. But as we all know with these trucks there isn't a whole lot of savings in the used market.

Deciding on mine is kind of a mix of several stories above, I was about to turn 52 and had never bought a new vehicle in my life. I'd been driving a '96 Chevy pickup for over 20 years. I wanted a Jeep Wrangler (and just keep my old truck), but thought a Tacoma would be more practical. Sarge/Army green came out in both vehicles and there was no question what color I was getting. I test drove so many I can't remember them all. But I settled on the Gladiator after driving my old truck on deer trails in snow -no way I was buying something less capable. After test driving and finding features I liked and decided I'd pay for; I went from a basic Sport to a Willys Sport to a Willys. And my MSRP budget went from $35k to 40k to 50K+. It was all but impossible to find a Willys in sarge when I ordered -I checked from Miami to DC. So I spec'd it out to my liking and placed an order and in 16 days (counting 2 weekends) it was at my dealership. This truck is my favorite possession, not counting my home. I used to joke that my old truck tripled in value when I put my bags in it to go to the gun range.

Thank you. But, respectfully, I've run a Detroit locker in front on my TJ for many years (over a decade) without issue.
It's an old wives tale that you can't... Run that detroit or lunch box locker up front... it's all good .
:like: I've been running one in my XJ since sometime in early 2000s with 4:56 gears too. You just got to know when to coast "let off the gas" and when to give it gas. I will say it can be "fun" on ice.:)

I do understand that. Seven months before I got mine, I was going to call a buddy and didn't get around to it. He was about 2 hours away from me at the time and didn't feel well checked in to E.R. died there. He was a few years younger than me... I'm 52 now also.
Damn now that I think about it it was 7 months to the day.... RIP Will.
We are all limited time here and don't know when we're going to check out. A saying I used in early 90s "Life is short" I didn't use it in the same context then as I do now, but it's very true still.

I test drove an Overland because I was replacing a leased Honda Ridgeline. I ended up buying a Rubicon because I decided to buy instead of lease. I plan to keep this vehicle long term so I thought resale would be better if I do decide to sell at some point. We are also in the Mojave desert so there are a variety of trails to explore nearby.

Wow, Congratulations on your new JT!

I can't think of any 2 "pickup trucks" more different than the Honda vs Gladiator RUBICON.
Except maybe the Subaru Brat vs the Gladiator.
Respectfully, your pickups versatility just grew by 2000 percent!

In retrospect, I don't know why Honda doesn't build 'real' trucks.

Maybe the lawsuits with the 3 wheeler ATVs or the Suzuki Samurai issue keeps them away.
