You may not have ever withdrew the dipstick, but I'm sure someone used it when they were changing your oil. Unless it was Jiffy Lube, where they also use an impact to install the drain bolt LOL

I check the oil on our vehicles reguarly. Wife's Hyundai Tuscon eats oil, faster I think than my 08 JK. No dip stick is a problem for me as well.

Allegedly, BMW determined that 90 something out of 100 people never touched the dipsticks in their engines, so it became an accountants decision to remove them.

Don't blame the accountants, they don't make calls like this.

They may provide info to someone else who makes the call, but it's not their decision.

BMW N54 I6 didn't have one, either (~2007+).

And-- Most primary market BMW owners outside the M-cars unload the car as soon as the warranty expires and complimentary maintenance ends due to the high cost of keeping them on the road. Those primary owners are the least likely to ever check oil let alone tire pressure unless the light came on.

The good news is the sensors in the N54-forward are precise enough to tell you if it's low on oil, assuming they're working properly. BMWs have always operated on a higher pressure system that requires larger volumes. And the newer turbo motors take more oil comparatively to NA motors of similar displacement. The NA 3.0L I6 M54 in my e46 needs 6.5 qts. A 3.0L N54 is about 7 and the current B58 is around 7.5qts. The Hurricane 3.0 is 7qts.

And besides, BMW owners don't need a dipstick to check the oil. We all know to just look on the ground- if there's no fresh oil drips, there's nothing in the motor.

Maybe not the accountant's fault entirely but I suspect there's more that goes into it. There is a fair amount of thought given to dealer-service only systems than we likely realize. Dealers make their real money in the service bay. Minimizing the owner-service side helps to ensure repeat business for the dealer. I've had some say they weren't interested in selling to me because they knew I lived too far away to have it serviced there.

No dipstick. When you change the oil, you have to be careful to get the correct amount into the engine, because you can't check to see if you need to add or remove any. Welcome to Stellantis.

The grenadier hast the inline 6 BMW engine from the Supra and it does not have a dip stick. I don't prefer it, but it is what it is.

Our Volvo xc60 doesn’t have one either. It drives me crazy. It’s a digital dipstick accessed from the vehicle settings. I hate it.

When I bought our XC90 I bought the 100k warranty and 100k service package. All I have to do is call the dealer, they show up to the house with a loaner and bring it back when they're done.

Audi 2.0T also lacked a dipstick for a period. You could buy an aftermarket one, though, since they left the tube (with a cap).

Sensors and dash informatics are all the rage. Physical mechanisms are obsolete in the digital age!

Doesn't surprise me in the least there's no dipstick. Most drivers have little to no interest in physically checking fluid levels, at least not until things get so bad that something stops working or makes too many bad noises, and they then tend to be genuinely shocked or infuriated if/when they encounter such an annoyance as the engine automatically shutting off to protect itself from destruction due to their lack of checking the oil. Heaven forbid they periodically have to take five minutes of their busy life to actually open the hood and get their hands a little dirty, hence why manufacturers are going the route of installing a sensor to monitor things for them and ditch the dipstick that nobody wants to use anyway. All too often even the ones who will take the time to check the dipstick will do so incorrectly, then under or over fill as a consequence.

My brother had a 1977 Ford F150 with a 360 V8. He never checked the oil in it. When the valves would to rattle. He would add 6 qts of oil to it. The rattle would go away. Never changed the oil. Just the oil filter about once a year if he remembered to do it. That 360 had a cracked head at the spark plug hole. Leaked and burned oil. The inner front fenders were held in place with fiber glass. The truck was a rust bucket. He bought the truck new. After 3 years, it started to fall apart rapidly.
