There are definitly conditions where the MT will be more efficient but the AT will win out at higher speeds you will see on any average freeway.

I told Mediacom - the one and only internet provider in Polk County unless you count DSL which is also not possible here - that I'd pay part of their plant buildout to our area.
They said it would be a minimum of $40,000 and they had absolutely zero plans of coming this direction in the foreseeable future. They said there wasn't enough business out here. Yeah, right - I drive 3 miles and see a 40 acre multi-million dollar mansion with a guest house on the property, I go half a mile to the north and see a dozen homes that put ours to shame, a new huge Victorian style home on several acres, there's a whole lot of people out here who could easily pay their price.
The problem is it's not enough money. Profit but not enough.
It's pretty sad when one company has it all with no competition.
I even spoke face-to-face with the governor - oh, she gave her speech on how she's pushing for money for getting broadband to all of Iowa and has this plan and that plan - not a bit of it has happened. Microsoft - talked to them at the state fair a few years ago. They gave a bit talk on how they are partnering with companies to get wireless broadband to all of us. I signed up for their regular newsletter and updates and for a while checked their site on the project - nothing, no news. It died (apparently not enough money in it)




And the added ratios, closer ratios for the computer to choose from, lock up mode takes place more than just on the highway when you hit cruising mode. The automatic can choose the best ratio for a given situation, and the gears actually lose less due to friction. The gear sets in modern automatics are very different in efficiency from what they used to be. Bearings in more places.
The 9 speeds make it even better.

Not a fan of the MT anymore, did too many years with them and live in the mountains now. Florida, give me an MT, north Alabama is AT only!

We live in a more remote-ish area, and there is a small town just south of us that ran fiber everywhere, owned by the small town !?!?

It's most certainly not parasitic drag and you have probably similar rotating mass with the gear shafts that are constantly spinning as you do the planetary assemblies. In the grand scheme of losses in these bricks, the losses in the transmission are a rounding error.

What about fuelly? Still they're both about the same. And as scientific (or not) as they are, the fuel economy threads here have them at about the same there. That's really all we have to go by, results entered here and on other sites, and the government's tests. They get the same mileage by all of those polls. There are so many factors here that come into play with modifications and trims, but when I was on the stock Rubicon 33" mud tires, I got 22 highway at 75, and at 55-65, I got 23, so the government tests are pretty close. And this isn't a flat area. Actually, on the stock tires, I was pretty much spot on with the EPA ratings. Most other vehicles I've had, I've been easily able to beat it, without trying, but they were a bit slipperier in the aerodynamics arena.

At 70 mph on the auto, on a Rubicon, you'd be spinning 2030 rpm in 8th. On the manual, you'd be spinning 2170 in 6th. In 7th on the auto, you're at 2540, compared to 2450 in 5th on the stick. That's based on a 31.9" (nominal 33") stock Rubi mud tire, and stock gearing.

Yeah you can get an idea but there's just so much variance it's hard to control. They can probably work out to be very similar but from an engineering standpoint, the AT is going to be better in most situations.

In the scheme of things we drive brick with 4 wheels and a steering wheel so I doubt it makes all that much difference.

I hear you! Definitely one of my least favorite comments that I see on this forum.

I couldn't care less if they can sell a million Maverick units in the first couple of years of production (like the Mustang).

It'll happen soon enough. With the internal combustion engine, and all transmissions (electric is usually direct drive). Until then, I'm going to enjoy my antiquated gasoline powered manual transmission vehicle. My next jeep will hopefully be shiftless and single speed (and fully electric). That'll hopefully be 8-9 years from now for me, which gives me a little while more to row gears.

I hope I'm dead by then!!!!
