I am especially happy with my Curt Echo because it showed me that my JT brake wiring had failed and troubleshooting led me to a blown fuse.

Driving home from 4 wheeling, I felt like I was getting pushed by the trailer. I also noticed that when I was hitting the brake pedal, the Curt Echo App was not showing the Blue line going around the orange circle. So I started manually braking the trailer with the app and the O-Shit button and had zero issues and could feel the trailer dragging the JT. That confirmed that the Trailer was working fine and made me look into the JT.

I picked up the following to help with my troubleshooting.
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B001EOWQY4?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

I found that it was a fuse and the problem is solved.
But I feel like the way the App works with the Curt Echo allowed me to figure out I had a issue before it became a larger issue.
So I'm pretty uneducated on automotive mechanics, all around. To clarify, a bad wiring harness caused a fuse to blow and you subsequently lost (completely?) braking capacity? And you used the emergency brake as a substitute?

No,
That is not even close to what I typed.

I am sorry but I don't even know where to begin if what I typed was not clear enough.
This issue was with braking the Trailer ONLY not the JT.

I'd suggest that you read up on Trailer Brake controllers and how they work with the brakes on a trailer.

You did know where to begin, because you added a sentence that helped me to understand. Cool man. I guess we can part ways here.

+23 for Curt Echo.
Anyone having trouble with the Echo working loose? it hangs pretty far out. I know they give you a strap to retain it but looking to hear form folks that it's not a problem.

not one issue. I didnt realize it until I got the echo but the 7 pin plug has a little notch of plastic on the opening that holds the echo in there (See pic...not of truck...rando google image)

I used to use the retention strap but it flew off a while back. I do have a short Velcro strap I got from amazon that I use for long trips just for piece of mind but the little notch does its job well.

The strap will fail if it’s too tight, as the ball pops out of the strap. My replacement hadn’t come loose yet, but I pull it less tight. The actual controller has not wiggled out once. I also use an insurance strap, but have never needed it. I drove 350 miles without the strap last week with zero issues.

well i live in PA .. home of potholes and bad roads (makes off roading look smooth) ... love the Echo in the 22 JT ... first trip the rubber strap broke ... now just do a one loop of duct tape around each end of the Echo .. cheap insurance .... installed the Redac controller in the 21 JTO ... chassis plug was the hardest part ... it was buried WAY up in the dash above the kick panel and wrapped with tape to another harness ... down side of the ECHO is your phone must be plugged into charger cause the screen stay active all the time, two hour trip and phone shut down, Echo then works on last setting but no emergency braking

Yeah, thanks. I know this tab is there to retain things but was curious if with the Echo hanging so far out it has a bit of leverage and weight to cause it to droop and perhaps work it's way out from under that tab. Just looking for confirmation that this isn't a problem and it sounds like it isn't.

Another question I have is I installed a 7 way connecter on my wife's Highlander. So far all I have hooked up to it is 12v power. Can anyone confirm that's all that's needed? I have not made the connection of the blue wire to the brake input. I'm looking thru the Curt website and it's not super clear.

Thanks

I think this device allows phone-independent control.

The phone does not need to be on, nor does the app need to be open. It has an optional emergency braking physical button that goes on the dash. It’s wireless. You can destroy your phone and still have full functionality. And the straps only fail if they’re put on too tight. If the settings are configured correctly for your setup, you shouldn’t ever need the emergency braking button either. I’ve yet to need it with 10k miles of towing.

good for you BUT i have needed the emerg braking on icy roads ... gee 10K towing .... i have been towing trailers since i was 14 yrs old, that is nearly 60 yrs
now look around any forum and you will see most have trouble with the rubber strap/button ... duct tape not so much
sorry IF you think i am attacking you, just think of this post as a mirror

Thanks for the lecture. The 5k of towing experience is just with the Echo. And I think you’ll find that most who have the button on the strap fail, have it too tight. I’ve also been towing since I had my license. And towing takes forethought. Just because an emergency braking button isn’t necessary, doesn’t mean I won’t have it just in case. Just like extra large safety chains and emergency break away braking systems. I have them all, whether I’ll ever need them or not when towing responsibly and safely.

Just took my Echo on a 58 mile back country rd. About half the time in 4 low (pretty rocky) no problems

Just took my Echo on a 58 mile back road trip about 50% in 4 low. (Very bumpy) No issues. It does come with a rubber strap to secure it. I added an extra bungie around the unit.
