I have an acquaintance that used to work for big cell provider. Their main switch building had an entire floor owned by some unnamed government agency. The main trunk data cable passed through that floor. Such power potentially in the hands of an autocrat is quite frightening which is why I feel strong checks and balances and cross departmental oversight is vital.

I find it ironic authoritarian survelance is frequently propsed as a means to "protect" Open democracy. Fine line we have to walk in this country.

I agree with all this.

The key point being that with current laws, it is legal for commercial entities to monitor us in a way that law enforcement can not.

Its interesting, I read an article recently that a law enforcement agency was actually contracting with a commercial real time cell phone location company. This company exists primarily to serve "relevant" ads, but that doesn't stop LE from buying the data.

Actually, LE can legally track your cellphone without a warrant. The IMSI data is in the clear vs the actual voice which is encrypted(warrant required for the latter). You would be shocked to know how many agencies are currently doing that or gearing up to do so. Look up IMSI Stingray. Let’s just say I have experience with this hardware.

They have direct access, the others via requests and sharing. So to know instantly where you are, only those two would. Cops ask for location, however - or location history, that's different.

I'd really love to know how the heck this would even be possible (see below)->

So they have sensors and collect your DNA and transport it via a transporter device.
And they have embedded cameras and microphones that can follow you when you exit the car (or get into the back seat?)?

That article mentions Google as if that's the fault of the auto maker - nope, that's your PHONE.
People bitch about their car or truck but they still carry that phone around, they still text, they still take and post photos, they still use Google anything - including maps and browsers, they use instacrap, tiktok, fakebook and post till their fingers bleed on those stupid social mediocre sites - then bitch about their Jeep??? Really?
They use Waze, they use their trail map apps, whatever - and then the car collects too much data.
Zuck knows more about you and your life than you do - they can even predict how you vote, your age, what you eat and more - with crazy accuracy, yet ya still use that. And instacrap influencers? Please......... don't whine about what your vehicle does if you use those places.

Now I wonder - what does mozilla do with all the info they collect about you. Most browsers have some history with them - check your browser type, might even say mozilla in it. How did they get so wealthy since their software has always been "free".

Remember one thing, all of those disclaimers were written by attorneys who are trying to cast the net as wide as possible to protect their clients. However, one person's occupation, is another's kink.

For those interested - disconnecting both the merlot and dark pink cellular connectors on the back of the radio will still allow limited connectivity to SXM Guardian/ATT. Albeit, very slow and limited without the antenna. So this is not fool proof.

For those thinking of exploring their rights to remove the data upload to the mothership through the opt-out process listed in the FCA privacy pages - good luck and be ready for the run around. No one knows what you are asking, and they aren't equipped to handle the request. I went through the process and requested a receipt via email to confirm the request was completed... I don't expect to see it. I also expect I may be contacting a lawyer to explore a class action against FCA Connected Services for their inability to comply or even feign taking action on their published privacy policy.

You are correct that most people don't care at all about their privacy. All they care about is how convenient something is. My issue is that I do care and they make it extremely difficult, or even impossible, to stop the tracking. This is yet another reason (besides the fact that it sounds terrible) to throw away the factory tech and replace it. I don't need XM, bluetooth, or WIFI; so I will be unplugging the damn thing this weekend.

I was already leaning towards buying an old car to replace my Impala anyways, now I definitely will be. There are already way too many things trying to track everything I do to add a new car to that.

The auto industry is nothing compared to cell phone companies when it come to privacy. You've said it loud and clear!

The EU data privacy regs are really tightening up. Probably because they have fairly recent experience with autocrats and dictators and know how easily it can be misused.

Thanks. Its not stupid to try to disable telematics for privacy reasons. There are services now that will locate any vehicle using telematics vehicle information. Just like companies can buy real time mobile phone user location data that is not anonymized.

I have zero interest in using most of the features you mentioned. I'm not worried about the car being hacked. Just it being easily observed.

I also think that you are wrong with only Sirius and ATT having knowledge of your location. When you call emergency services they know your location.

I also don't care about OTA updates for U-Connect if its working propertly to begin with. Based on info provided in earlier posts, I'm going to remove the antenna. connections. With bluetooth I can do CarPlay and drive everything from the phone.
Going on the lamb?

My jeep didn't come with a 8.4 or a telematics module. I put the 8.4 in and its been working fine. It still has app control of the jeep. Witech 2 scan shows a bunch of radio communication problems but it doesn't interfere with any operations of the radio or jeep that I can tell. Since I never had a telematics module, I have no idea what I'm missing so no harm. Firmware updates on the radio are easily rectified. Acquire the updates on the internet and unzip them to a usb dongle. Do the update yourself. My 8.4 has the latest update. Just be warned there is a stepping stone around version 22.3 or 22.6 or something like that. If your firmware is really old, you'll need to update to 22.3 first, then to the latest which is around 41.0.
