Happened on vacation, 1300km from home. Left 3 days early and drove 16 hours straight to get home because I would not have been able to restart it. I am beyond furious that this had even a possibility of happening. Took it to a dealership in Vancouver when the warning first came up, they said it is not possible to disable the alarm and that the whole DEF tank needed to be replaced but that it would take about 2 weeks for one to be delivered.

Getting it chipped and deleted is 100% NOT environmentally friendly and will void my power-train warranty. I do not want to do it, but its 8 months old and this is ridiculous. Beyond furious.

So it wasn't just add DEF but an actual service to the DEF system?

Wow, don't they know these are to be trucked, not towed? 4 wheels on the ground or 4 off the ground, but not 2 and 2.

Never lift just one end and tow it.
On a trailer or fully on a truck is the best.
Flat tow is fine IF you follow their instructions and tow in a forward direction, not backwards.
But either front wheels on the ground OR rear wheels on the ground with the other end up - no.

And then you're going to delete a whole system because of one failure? Seriously? It fails once, bad experience and you're going to rip it apart.
Why not fix it and move on?
So if the transmission fails next - rip it out, too?
The chances of it going goofy twice is not great at all - so I suspect there's something else on your mind here to go all extreme on one single failure - which can be resolved.

Waiting to see what gets ripped out when something else fails.........................

Got in July of 2022. It has been into the same dealership twice since February because of "Incorrect DEF" warnings. Both times they cleared the code, said all will be fine when it warms up and sent me on my way.

Bad timing to ask the question but i'm going to do it anyway moreso for the 3rd party readers than you... so here goes:

Did you get everything from the dealership in writing? Cause BS like this is the difference between you getting a loaner and them telling you to pound sand.

I had a whine in the rear differential on my 06 soltice. 36k powertrain. i took it to a dealer in 07 with 24k miles. They said "can't duplicate" i said "you're fucking idiots because it's not an intermitant problem" and requested a ride-a-long which they denied. I forced the service writer to type out my specific complaint word for word in the service record and requested a copy.

Around 42k miles (out of warranty) they whine got worse. I took it to the same dealer and played dumb like i had no idea what was wrong. Magically, this time they knew it was the differential. To their credit, they didn't alter my service records so when i asked them to print out my entire history my previous (in warranty) complaint was right there. Frankly I was expecting to have to go home to get them.

Long story short, i got a loaner and a differential replaced outside of warranty free of charge because i strong armed them into documenting their previous stupidity.

If your gut says something is wrong, or you have the experience to know something is wrong, never let a service writer (who probably has been working there <4 months and knows as much about your jeep as the lot guy) tell you everything is okay.

This is amazing advice. I 100% did not do that in my previous ‘visits’ to this dealership’s service department. For sure as shit doing it from now on though.

Outside of getting rid of def I don’t know what real advantages you’d get in a modern diesel. The fuel economy is already phenomenal and the power is there too.

Not really specifically related, but...

I bought a new 2019 tractor in 2020. No DEF system. Apparently in 2021 our mighty EPA dictated that any tractor sold in the last few years needed a recall to have a DEF system installed. I got the letter in the mail informing to take it to the dealer for the "free upgrade". In the trash that paper went. A few months after that I get a call from someone at TYM initially informing me that this was a "serious environmental issue" and reminding me that this "upgrade" is free of charge. I laughed at the guy and asked if he really thought I was going to have that idiotic sh!t done to my tractor. He finally broke down and started talking normal to me. Said it's all stupidty. Everyone he had been calling for the last month had told him the same thing...NOPE!!

I hear now about the complaints with the new installed systems. It's a fiasco that those few who actually did the "upgrade" will have to live with until they finally get tired of it and sell the tractor.

OP, hope you can breathe up there! (Forest fires).
If you go with the delete, keep all your parts for the day the gov makes you put the system back in. Not saying they will but “just in case”.

My friend did a delete on his Nissan Titan in Calgary and he’s so glad he did. He gets 100 km more per tank. The kit let’s him select either to run “normal”, or 60 HP or 100 HP at the push of a button.

He’s had his truck 2 years now and happy with his delete.
(If you ever find yourself driving down to Calgary, look me up!)
