If your goal is to cool the lower level of your garage, insulating the garage ceiling and perhaps drywall will cut down on size of unit and cost of running, but does add a lot of work and cost to the job….Job

Great feedback and information!
I think it's going to a mini split, and the Mr Cool is looking great.
No offense to the cat in the hat, but after 20 years of dealing with Mitsubishi computers, that ain't happening! ?
Mitsubishi makes computers ??? The things you learn……..

@Lunentucker if you decide to go with a window shaker, try to find a U shaped one. Some work on similar principles as the split inverter systems discussed in the thread, they're more efficient and quieter in the room.

I saw those and intend to investigate more. I wasn't sure what I was looking at.

I've not read though the whole thread so someone might have already covered some.
I'm installing a mini split in my "Tiny house" I've been building, "12000 BTU 120v" simple install so far. I've got to put in breaker and wire it. Purge it, pressure test and up and running. Cost total less than $800.°° that's including a vacuum pump and fittings for it too. The size I'm cooling is 12'x26'x9' apx. Insulation is R19 walls ceiling and R30 floor. Right now I'm just using a 9000 btu portable A.C. I turned on the portable unit on 4 July. I'm up about 100 kw from month before without using A.C in June. I do know it's not the same thing but this can give you a idea on options.

I'm in N. AL. So quite warm and humidity is nasty especially with all the rain. Not as bad as Savannah GA or Florida though.

I installed a "window unit" in back wall of a 10x16 portable building seven years ago from box store. It's holding up but as said by others the humidity is a problem still. I've found mold and mildew stains on lower part of wall. This is why I figured I would try a mini split. Quite a few have installed them on or in RV's and T.T. in last few years with good results.

My mother has one of these u shaped window units. Very nice and quiet. Hers isn’t big enough to do a garage through.

I don't think I can make one work, unless I install an additional window for it. My garage windows are casement windows.

Yeah, I wasn’t advocating for one of these in a garage. Just chiming in that they are a great option for a bedroom where you want/need quiet. To me a mini split is absulutely the way to go. If it were me I’d get one that could also heat. In fact, your thread now has me thinking about adding one of these for my garage now too. I like to work out ther in the winter but it’s honestly too damn cold.

Most, if not all mini splits are actually heat pumps and can provide heat down to as low as 10 degrees or so. Keep in mind that the colder it gets the less efficient they are however, particularly below about 30 degrees or so.

Yeah, thanks. I did not realize this until this thread.

They have all come precharged for years. They give you a range on line length and are good for a fairly long line with the charge they come with.
The unit in my shop was precharged.

Installation of the inner and outer units themselves is simple.
All you need is a hole in the wall large enough to run the lineset, electric and drain tube.

Daikin has the best cold weather rating for people up in our area - they'll run and furnish heat even at around 11-15 below 0

I did a lot of hours of research on minisplits tis time around as we wanted something that could keep putting out efficient heat even below 0 with no auxiliary heat needed.

But where he lives he's not going to give a rip about this LOL -

You are correct. The Daikin Aurora mini split systems will heat efficiently down to -15 degrees outdoor ambient temperatures. They will heat below those temperatures, but it won’t keep the indoor space at 70 degrees.

Mr Cool DIY mini split.
Yes it is. Most HVAC companies won’t even service a Mr Cool system if something goes wrong with it. It’s considered a disposable unit like a window unit. But for the price, you could buy 10 of them for what most HVAC companies charge to install and warranty a name brand system like a Daikin.

Daikin mini split single zone, the biggest they make. Japanese mfg.. I will not go with anything Chinese made HVAC related. I have a 30X40 shop. I use it for both heat and cooling. Blanket insulated pole barn with a steel roof. It struggles above 95+ but I can keep it cool to around 75 degrees. The trick is to cool the shop early :) I also use it for heat and it works great. I also supplement heat with my grandad's 100 yo plus pot belly on <20 degree days.
