I have this as well. But only in 4-Low and only when switching between Drive and Reverse. And, @JeepCares I brought this to the attention of my dealer but they said it was "Normal Operation".
I'm sorry to hear that, G8R. As our team is not mechanically trained, we rely on the diagnosis of our dealers in order to assist our customers. If you continue to have this trouble, I recommend getting a second opinion on the state of your vehicle. Thank you for sharing, and please feel free to keep us updated on your visits if you require additional assistance.

Not sure if this was covered in this thread yet, but mine does it when I'm in a hurry and start the truck and put it in reverse right away. If I let it idle for even 10 seconds or so, no clunk. The mechanically sympathetic side of me is making sure I let it idle on every start now.

This is very helpful information, mine does the same thing. Will be having the dealer check it next time for service.

I have this happen too, not consistently though. First dealership said they updated software and no change. Second dealership said they started up a Gladiator on the lot and got a similar clunk noise like I described and said it was normal operation. Not really helpful and I hope this doesn't end up being an issue long term.

I get the clunk in the morning if I go from Park to Drive too fast after starting. If I do it very gently I an avoid the clunk. I can also get a clunk doing about 20MPH, letting off the gas, then hitting the gas again.

Anyone actually have a dealer diagnose or do anything about this?

It only happens to me when I first start up in the morning and especially if I don't let the truck warm up a bit, similar to what most people are saying. I don't hear or feel anything when driving or if it's the second or third time I started the truck that day. Any or the more mechanically inclined think this is a serious issue?

Any updates? I'm just got mine about 3 months ago, in the last month it started doing the same clunk noises as described here. Took it to the dealership, and got the "functioning as designed." It might be just me, but the noise is getting louder and occurs more often.

Reviving this for what is probably a stupid question. Mine has always made the clunk. It’s far worse when the drivetrain is under tension like when parked on an incline. It’s also randomly and very noticeably makes it on totally flat surfaces after it’s been sitting, which sounds more like a temperature or lubrication related issue. I’ve just excepted it as one of the many quirks since no one seems to have had a dealership tell them there’s a problem.

This is actually the first automatic transmission car that I’ve owned that’s my daily driver. I’ve always owned manuals if it was an option. Today I noticed something. If the truck is in my driveway which is slightly inclined, facing the street and I put it in reverse, the truck immediately rolls down hill (forwards). In other words, reverse doesn’t hold the truck AT ALL on an incline. I’ve never noticed this but I don’t frequently let off the brake without immediately applying throttle from years of doing the clutch, brake, accelerator dance on hills. This feels like SMG behavior. Most automatics I’ve ever driven would hold themselves on hills in Drive. I never tested one in reverse. Am I just being crazy/goofy, and is this normal that reverse won’t hold the truck? I’m wondering if this is also just the weight of the thing or if there’s something wrong here since this trucks transmission makes so much noise.

Mine has a clunk now and then when going from P to R. I let it idle down in the morning and that seems to help. Don't know if it's in the trans or other places. I think they should all be replaced with. a 6.4 Hemi and trans conversion to fix this,,,LOL.

So I played with my transmission again. This time it didn’t roll away. So I tried moving it up and down the driveway to different spots but the truck just held. You could feel the tension in the drivetrain. Finally it did it again. It was holding and then just released and rolled down the driveway. All of this was while facing downhill in reverse. This almost feels like electronic hill start or hill hold. I got the immediate sense that something is turning off in the transmission that then releases to truck to roll away. It feels like hill start assist. I wasn’t aware that it works in reverse. I don’t think this is related to the clunk. Of course this still begs the question why only at certain places on the driveway. I’m thinking this may be at the point where it’s at 8% grade, but who knows. I would never let reverse hold the truck in lieu of park and get out anyway
