I'm not quite there yet, but eventually I'll need to replace my stock tires (I have the duelers that came on some Willys). I'm probably going to stick with the same size so that I don't have to recalibrate my speedometer or anything, but I'm definitely going with something else. I've never done the 5 tire rotation, so it's pretty much brand new. Are people selling them, scraping them, or keeping them on as a spare in the case of an emergency if they're the same size?

Are you keeping the stock wheels? I think to save $ you might want to keep the spare and if you want buy a 5th tire and place it on the spare? Lots of options. I am going to upgrade soon as well and put the tires and wheels up for sale at a good price for the upgraded JEEP wheels.

@Guns_N_Rosaries keep the spare. It's only 2yrs old and you said brand new. If you where changing the size, that would be a different recommendation to replace. :like:

Keep the spare. Even if you change tire size - keep the spare. A spare tire is what the name suggests - a spare. It's meant to get you from wherever you got the flat, to home (or to the tire shop) so that the right size tire can be fixed.

If you're running 35's and you pop on a 33 or a 31 or whatever for a few miles you're not going to hurt anything. It's the super-size equivalent of running a bicycle spare on a sedan - it'll get you there.

I put 35s on my Gladiator. I had a cheap ($80) new Kinda 35" tire put on my original steel spare wheel. It fits right in the factory location, so that's where it is.

Spare matches the rest of the tires as far as size, though it's a different brand.

As far as not changing sizes to avoid having to recalibrate the speedo, that doesn't make sense. It's literally a $100 fix. Do it once and you could probably sell the software after that.

I'm told that AlfaOBD isn't married to any direct vehicle so if anyone local to you has that, buy them lunch and havthem recalibrate your speedo.

I have 315s and a 315 spare. Going to 37s soon. Re gear and all. I'll look for a good used 37 as it will mount in row spare spot.

I get that people don't like or often need a spare and look to get rid of it, but that's making decisions based on ideal situations and 'sunny days'. It's there for exactly when don't expect to need it, for that 'rainy day' situation you didn't plan for. And boy, when you need it, you're really SOL without it. Don't handicap yourself by getting rid of it. If you can keep it, why not keep it? What do you gain by scrapping it?

I would keep the original spare.

Just check the pressure once a year or take a compressor with you.

BTW, I had a puncture some months ago where I had to use my spare.

Repaired it later on with this and is still tight.

Have this now on board and on the next flat I even don't have to change the wheel, if I am lucky ...

This may be a dumb question, but do aftermarket wheels fit the spare holder as long as the center cap is off? Or is there a width limit?

I get nervous with only a single spare on the sharp, young, uneroded rocks on my usual trips in Death Valley, the Colorado Plateau, etc. Had too many flats on week-long trips, where driving in deep backcountry on your spare can take the fun out of things. All sidewall cuts. I carry a good plug kit, a gluetread patch kit, but no second spare. Would never consider no spare. When I went to bigger tires I got five wheels and tires and rotate them all

I traded my stock spare tire with wheel for Jeep stuff.
I bought another Overland wheel from a forum member who was replacing his with after-market wheels. He sold his one at a time to people like me who wanted a matching spare.
I bought 5 new tires the same diameter as my stock Duellers and now do a 5 tire rotation.
This way it puts off needing another set of tires, I always have a matching spare if I rip a tire and it can't be repaired (as opposed to having 35,000 miles on tires and having to buy a new one and being out of whack wear-wise)
And it makes sure my spare is aired up all the time, and the spare winch works as it's exercised every few thousand miles.
My wife showed the importance of a matching tire and wheel - TWICE - when she hit things that made the tires unrepairable. Well, they could be repaired but they ended up being the spare and the matching spare went on the Jeeps until we traded Jeeps or bought new tires.
I hated the idea of having tires maybe out of production for a match, or having tires 1/2 to 3/4 worn and not ready to buy new tires and having one blow badly.
So I run 5 matching tires/wheels and rotate the spare in every time. Wear is perfectly equal across all.
A lot of guys want the plain steel wheels the spares come on as either winter wheels or because the like the looks of steel wheels. Yeah, it's a thing, sort of retro.

100% agree On my last rig I would carry dual spares for some higher risk trips - one on the rear carrier and one underneath in the stock location.

My spare sits under the truck and hasn't been touched since I bought it over four years ago. I've checked it a few times to make sure it was still inflated, but that's it. I bought a set of take-offs to replace the originals, which gave me matching spares.
