Does anyone have experience with an aux tank? I have been looking at the Long Ranger which I like quite a lot. Install seems to be straightforward, if a bit of a pain.

I am also looking at placing my spare on a seing mount bumper from Rugged Ridge that I saw on a SEMA video, so would be able to utilize that space for a tank as well.

I appreciate your thoughts on this!

In to watch responses. I haven't seen this but am curious about it. I just picked up a Gladiator. I have two old flat, rectangular ATV gas cans that each hold 2.5 gallons that I was going to strap into the bed if on an expedition. But man, it'd be nice to have a permanent auxillary tank.

I saw that Rugged Ridge bumper too... looks like a lot of extra weight, in the worst possible place (pulling weight off the front axle, adding more than its own weight to the rear axle). Same goes for the heavy things you might mount on it (spare, jack, water etc).

Is the extra 18.5 gallons in the Long Ranger not enough? I haven't seen a really clean Gladiator fuel tank that goes in the spare tire spot, just some generic things that are fairly small volume. And if like most, you take pause at the expense of the Long Ranger tank, wait til you add up the per-gallon costs on a semi-custom spare tire tank install. Jerry cans in the bed start to look pretty good again

The problem with Jerry cans is they take up valuable space for food, water, etc. Add to that we plan on having some sort of a camper top on it, and fuel in your living space is a no go.

We live in the desert so plan on some longer range expeditions and there is NO fuel available on many of those treks.

I don't know the weight of that bumper system yet, so that could be an issue. I might go with the AEV bed mounted spare, but once again, that encroachment of living space is a big issue.

I hear you. I've done a lot of trips around Death Valley where you can burn half a tank just getting from the closest gas station to the trailhead, so I used to carry four 20L jerry cans for gasoline. Be aware though, most people on this board live in the east and can't really understand needing more than a couple little rotopax, so you might get some irrelevant comments.

Currently I've got a diesel JT with a heavy camper (ACCC). I went with an in-bed fuel tank, which yes is in the living space. Not a problem at all with diesel. Could well be a problem with gasoline. Certainly I never would carry my Scepter MFCs full of gasoline in my sleeping space before. But so far I'm a lot more impressed with my Titan tank than those MFCs. One fill opening, one seal, has a proper pressure vent, no other seals or pipes or plumbing. I just use a dead-simple shaker siphon, no pumps or electrical anything. I never managed to use the MFCs without spilling at least some, they're heavy and awkward, and I had several seals leak up on the roof of my old truck. Good riddance

Yes, I kinda figured out the geographics early. We have a 100 mile run just get out to the deep desert. From there it is 100 miles in any direction to hopefully get fuel.

You start linking some trails together in the mojave desert and bam, somehow you got this 300 mile route plan. Extra fuel is definitely needed on the western half even not offroad. Ended up on a 200 mile stretch of highway with no gas stations.

Check with @Turnswrench he is in Alaska and just got a new auxiliary tank in for his Gladiator if I remember correctly.
