I'm still perhaps months from making the jump to another platform, but I took a first baby step today.
The bride and I ventured out for lunch, and while in a bigger small town near home, I decided to start looking around.
2024 GMC Canyon AT4
Our first stop was a GMC trucks dealer.
As it happened, he had just unloaded a new 2024 Canyon AT4.
This one was in white, which is not likely to my color choice, but the color didn't matter much at this very early stage in the game.
Honestly, this was the lowest pressure most laid back car dealership I'd ever been in.
Family business established in 1961.
Zero dealer fees. No processing fee. No doc fee. Nothing. Interesting.
I told we'd like to drive one, but were in no way purchasing today.
He checked the fuel, and seeing that it was very nearly empty, took it to the other side of the building to gas up at their own pump on-site.
That's some old school stuff too around here.
He didn't even ask to see my license, but I did leave a nice Mojave as collateral.
First Impressions -
Visually, inside and out, the truck is great looking. I like the body lines, and even though I'd seen the interior online and thought it could be better, in 3D it looks great. Leather wrapped and soft plastics abound.
This one had the 20 inch wheels, which really fill the wheel wells nicely.
The Drive -
For a turbo 4, the exhaust is tuned nicely, and it has a little bit more growl and rumble than the stock Gladiator.
OOOPS!! All the way back is actually Low gear?!?!
That might take some getting used to. No wonder it wasn't shifting.
Once I caught the error and got it into drive, she goes!
310 HP and 430 pounds of torque make this little truck jump!
Road and wind noise were all but non-existent.
Road comfort and handling were perfect.
The stereo sounds great.
One thing I don't like is that the lights are all controlled from the screen. There is no physical switch, knob, or button.
We returned, talked a bit more, got his card, and left for our next stop.

2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD
The TRD was the highest trim level they had of the five trucks they had.
Again, not a likely color for me in the silver, but this was more about the drive.
First Impressions -
Visually, not as pleasing as the GMC, but a nice looking truck.
Inside was disappointing, with lots of cheap feeling plastics with hard corners and edges. The seats were comfortable, but didn't feel as nice as the GMC.
The Drive -
Another turbo 4 with decent pep, but clearly not as much as the Canyon.
278/265 felt less commanding.
The road ride was harsh. I questioned if they had the tires pumped up to 60 psi, because this thing was a wagon compared to the Mojave, and a Ben Hur chariot compared to the Canyon.
Cheap sounding sound system.
Summary -
GMC wins round 1 handily.
I loved my previous two Tacomas, but there's too much daylight between these two to ignore.
What's next?
Ranger
Stay tuned.
