Overfill equals BAD. Very much increases the pressure throughout the system which can cause all sorts of internal leaks and decreased longevity of the engine. At Harley Mechanics School we would get get seriously dinged on any test where we didn't have the oil at least 3/4 of the way up the dipstick but also any bit at all over the cross hatches.
When I was racing dirt track street stock cars years ago we would run them a quart over full right off from the start. The theory was that when you made the hard left turn at speed and your oil walked up the right side of your crankcase you would have a little extra oil in the pan to keep your pick- up screen from getting uncovered. I don’t know if it worked but I never saw engines blowing up that could be traced to the extra quart.

If you have a 1970 AMC with a 390 - you run 6 quarts in it. The oil drain back is horrible, plus - when you get it good and warm then slow down quickly all of the oil went to the front, starving the pump for a while. Some guys even put stainless steel pipe cleaners in the middle of the push rods to slow the oil going up to the rockers as the tops of the heads would get filled with oil under high RPMs.
