I'm putting together a combination Jeep / camper toolkit so I can get myself out of some jams. One of the items I'm thinking of putting in is a tire-plug kit, so that if either while off-roading or hauling the camper, I get a flat (say, a nail or screw or such through the tread) Potentially I can plug it myself, then air up with a portable compressor (at least enough of a repair to get to a REAL tire shop)

I do know that if the hole is close to the edge of the tire or through the sidewall, plugging ain't gonna be an option...

So, does anyone have a plug kit they'd recommend, or are they all pretty much the same?

They are not all the same stay away from real cheap ones, I have a couple off brands and an ARB kit, the ARB is a tank ya get what you pay for, But I have not had to use it yet. I have plugged a few tires and when trying to push and turn through the hole is when you will see the difference, but my cheap ones did the job…Jack

ARB makes a nice kit. I using a kit from NAPA. I've plug a few tires with it. Even plugged a sidewall. What ever kit you get. Make sure it's heavy duty. Pushing through steel belts on some tires is almost impossible. One tire, I had to use a drill and drill bit to get trough the steel belt.

Safety Seal one is a good one too, I think it is the same as ARB one. With it I've plugged sidewalls too.

Used a generic a few decades ago. It worked and lasted the rest of the life of the tire.

Recently used a Safety Seal. Was a small nail hole so it took a lot of effort to get the thick awl through that hole. So get a quality tool.

Interesting tip: With the first one it was already flat, and I pulled off the wheel and did the work on the ground and added air then put it back onto the vehicle when done. But for the recent one it was just a slow leak, still full of air. I just raised the vehicle slightly to get weight off the tire and rotate it to a convenient point, but did not take it off the truck. Got everything ready, pulled the nail, and immediately pushed in the spiral awl thing. Not much air came out because it was just a nail hole. When finished with the awl I got the other needle with the plug ready, then pulled the awl and immediately pushed in the plug. Again, not much air lost. When done I was able to lower it to the ground and then top it off with a bit of air.

I have the Jaco TRX-50 kit. I haven't needed to use it yet but it is very solid.

It is funny to me how some post go unnoticed. I would have never read this one if I just hadn't searched for a kit myself. I'll start by saying, I didn't find anything.

The reason I was looking is because I needed to repair a tire on a new zero turn. I finished my second cut with it last weekend ( 5 hts on the meter). I observed my son cutting around a stump when the rear tire was doing all kinds of ugly. I stopped him and noticed a cut in the sidewall. It didn't appear to be leaking and he finished the job.

Yesterday, I returned to the property and found that same tire to be flat. I assumed it was the cut on the sidewall. All of my tools and equipment are still at the old place. HF here I come. I picked up a cheap air compressor, jack and a fourway.

HF plug kits are garbage in my opinion. The tools are the worst part. I would like a nice plug tool kit.

I have had the ARB orange box kit for years and have used it to plug a couple tires on friends and fellow trail riders vehicles. It does the job.

I also have a sidewall kit by GlueTread but have never had to use it so no comment.

Sounds like there's an Amazon order in my future

Then I need to figure out how to, if needed (hopefully not!), re-seat the bead on Method bead-grips...
Although, that's why I'm also going to keep my spare and take along a jack that can be used on soft ground (not the scissor jack)

There is a company that makes a sidewall patch that can get you off the trail and back to civilization. One of the YouTube Overlanding channels tested it and it held up. I can´t remember which one, though. I´m looking in my bookmarks because I think I saved it. But it is not cheap. I want to say over $100. But if you go the the spare and then lose another in the middle of BFE, I think it would be good to have, in addition to a plug kit.

I have seen guys with a sidewall tear use a shit load of plugs to get out off the trail. Ugly and not ideal, but in each case it worked.

I carry a ton of Walmart plugs and the glue that comes with it, along with a couple tools in case one breaks. I should probably upgrade to a better kit.

I once used the leather laces out of my Sperry Topsider shoes to finish plugging a sidewall after I ran out of plugs. Got me home from Albert Pike, Arkansas to Oil City, Louisiana LATE on a Sunday.
