GM isn't switching oils - they are using that to kick the can down the road and delay engine failures due to pissy manufacturing - rough journal finishes and so on.I dunno, I’m not a fan of switching oil weights on a whim Like GM is trying/tried to do on the 6.2 trucks. Now my 2019 C7 GS has used Mobil 1 0w-40 from the factory and I see no reason to change that.
I say the same with my brand new leftover ‘24 JTM. I plan to stay with 0w-20, but am shopping for the brand that would have the best additives for it. I’m at 5XX miles on it and will be changing the oil at 1K as it’s almost a year old, but still new… I’m also a young‘ish fogie that still changes his oil/filter once it’s 1 year old or 3K miles.

They are still saying stick to the original oil once replaced, and for all built before and after the engines in question.
So no, GM isns't switching.
Mobil and some others use base oils and chemistry that fights loss in viscosity - it resists it more than others so won't thin down as much as some. There are others, of course.
I say change at 1 year regardless of miles, and books going back decades actually say the same thing. I don't put very many miles on my cars, but they get oil changes every fall regardless as I don't want them sitting over the winter with anything other than clean, new oil in them.
