Oil - going from 0w20 to 0w40

I plan to switch from 0w-20 to 0w-30 next oil change. This is my first Blackstone report from my latest oil change on 0w-20. It’s to establish a baseline. What’s y’all’s thought on the results? Thanks

I had an X-ray done of my chest a while back. The results came back and the comments said something like “patient chest unremarkable” and I was like wow rude. Haha unremarkable basically means there’s nothing wrong. I was still offended.

As promised here’s my report. This oil sample was taken upon completion of my latest Overland trip from N.C. to NM and UT and back. The truck was just about at GVWR and spent a fair amount of time in 4WD in the mountains. So in other words it was driven hard and out away wet…

I think the results are very good given that I ran it longer than I usually do (I wanted to wait until I returned and do the OC myself).

As promised here’s my report. This oil sample was taken upon completion of my latest Overland trip from N.C. to NM and UT and back. The truck was just about at GVWR and spent a fair amount of time in 4WD in the mountains. So in other words it was driven hard and out away wet…

I think the results are very good given that I ran it longer than I usually do (I wanted to wait until I returned and do the OC myself).
Looks great. Another decent report that shows these engines are fine with a thicker grade if one chooses it.

One analysis as an indicator?
I want to see several, and over a long period.
Also would love to know about VVL operation such as engagement and release and phaser operation over time.
I'll reserve any "see, it is fine" for a couple years down the road.
We get really concerned about such things with automatics but with the modern engine.....naw, use anything you want, even with the extremely tight clearances of the valve train parts.
(I'll post a bit about the vvl solenoids later showing where viscosity matters in the releasing of the high lift)

I’ve been running 0W30 in mine for about 1000 miles now. MPGs and engine temperatures are all very similar to 0W20. I will say the engine is noticeably quieter and very smooth now. This is especially true at engine temps above 220°F when off roading.

0w30 is very similar and has some overlap with 0w20 it's not a huge jump, but can appear to make a sound difference to some (all of mine have always been quiet, so it really wouldn't matter in all of the 3.6s I've had)
It's not a huge jump at temperature and has been used for years in similar engines.

We also have an advantage with the oil cooler. With bigger jumps in other engines, the heat change is pretty large, and the heat generated at specific points in the engine is a lot greater due to the shear forces- which generate HEAT.
Oil temps with ours is a bit tricky because of where the oil temp sensor was moved to, and our oil cooling system.
I'd love to see what the sump temperature is with the larger jumps. I bet it's quite a bit higher.

But the knee-jerk reactions which prompt the jumps to much ticker oil will prevail and continue.

Correct, oil temp at the sump could be different. That’s completely speculation though without a new temp sensor installed. Comparing apples to apples sensors wise, all the temperatures and pressure are right on par with what I noticed using 0w20. I am one of those weirdos that has the sensor display screen on the info entertainment center permanently. Given the results of going to 0w30, I won’t be going back. Fuel efficiency is still 20mpg to 22mpg during my weekly commute so no difference there either.

Yeah, i don't care to see the radio station screen or half a nav screen - mine shows the ORP gauges on that nice big radio.

Fuel efficiency is still 20mpg to 22mpg during my weekly commute so no difference there either.
Since mpg varies so much with humidity, temperatures, speeds, winds and more - there's no way to ever know if it's impacted mpg.
That being said - we're not talking large numbers anyway - we're talking partial miles per gallon and over a fleet of vehicles produced, that matters a lot.
but even IF there was as large as a .2 to .3 mpg change - you'd likely never know it

I'm an old man who has cranked wrenches to make things work with out knowing the book smarts as to why. I have great respect for those who have acquired that knowledge and are willing to share with others. Thank you.
So, lets get to the bottom line. I have a 2023 Gladiator with 7700 miles. Is it better to start using 5W30 oil now, or stick with the 0W20 specified by the manufacture? Thanks again..
