The VA personal property tax threw me for a loop the first year. I was like "what the heck is this noise?". Seemed ripe for cheating.

Live in WA now with high sales tax but low property tax (conservation trust) and no income tax, much preferred.

When I lived in California you paid a % of what the vehicle was "worth" each year with reg. renewal. I just bought cheap vehicles. Now back in NY the reg fees seem dainty and quaint. In both states you paid sales tax -- one time -- when you bought the vehicle. However, in NY you get some credit for what you paid on the vehicle you are trading in.

This is where CA gets ya. They charge you for sales tax on new car purchases. Then when you sell the car, they charge your buyer sales tax on the purchase price(double taxation). And if instead, you trade in your car for a new one, you dont get any credit for the taxes you already paid on the old one. With the amount of cars on the road in CA, the state is getting massive tax income from all this double taxation

Yea we all hate it here. We have had two governors try and get rid of it, but were unsuccessful.

What do they base that off of?

When I lived in Kentucky, another "Commonwealth" state, they base a percentage of the NADA wholesale book value. The problem is that they only would use one static copy for the whole year. So if your values tanked during the year like the Gladiator has, you had to wait until their next years NADA copy to hopefully re-baseline the valuation.

Our county uses NADA vale as of January 1st of the current year. Average trade in value supposedly. So I logged onto NADA on 1/1 and printed out a copy of my "value" as of 1/1/24. We shall see.

Moved from Texas to New Mexico when I retired. Live just north of Ruidoso. A beautiful little tourist town. No personal property taxes. Our house on 5 acres plus two adjacent lots for a total of 18 acres, we pay around $1,750 a year. This is $3,775 cheaper than Texas. Our combined property taxes and state income tax here is less than our property taxes in Taxas, I mean, Texas.

We pay a registration fee in Indiana. My Gladiator was about $265 for the year. It is a 2021 Rubicon.

It goes down each year and then flattens out at about $112. My daughter's Renegade is a 2015 and it was also $112.
