Did an oil change this morning on my 2023 gladiator. Removing the Mopar filter from the cap was a little difficult. However, the new one fit on super loose and would not stay stuck to the cap. It is a genuine Mopar bought from my local auto parts store. Yes, it is the correct sizing never had that happen before… Anything I should be concerned about? I have 25,000 miles and I’ve only ever used Mopar filters cannot recall this happening before. In a appeared broken or out of place on the filter cap engine seems to be running fine.

The tab inside the cap is the actual bypass valve. While it did not snuggly fit on the end, it would not have threaded in all the way unless the tab went into the filter end hole recess. I have had this once before also on a MOPAR filter and ran fine.

If paranoid, can unscrew and inspect the inside tab and make sure it is not cracked. New caps are not that expensive.

Isn't the cap and filter supposed to be an assembly, replace the filter and cap as one piece?

Just curious what was the Part# that you installed?

That is for the diesel, not the gas Pentastar

@Marmaduke

Sounds like you may have broken the oil bypass valve that resides inside of the oil filler cap. You did this when you removed the oil filter from the oil filler cap. See Tech Service Bulletin below..

IF the bypass valve inside the oil filler cap is broken/damaged and then you push on a new oil filter, the filter will be unstable/wobbly, etc..

Breaking the bypass valve that resides inside the oil filter housing cap is a problem that occurs when you bend the oil filter itself and wiggle the oil filter when removing it....when you go to pull it off.

When you remove an oil filter from an oil filter housing cap - (Mopar - 68191350AA), just grab the oil filter and pull it straight off. Do not bend/tilt or wiggle the oil filter when removing it, just pull it straight off.

You can buy a Genuine Mopar Oil Filter Housing Cap (Mopar - 68191350AA) on Amazon and elsewhere..

Note proper placement of o-ring on the oil filter housing cap in this pic.

That may have happened. I don’t recall wiggling it much or hearing/feeling anything break. All oil pressures and temps have happened as if normal, but I will buy another cap and replace. Cheap fix. Thanks for the help.

Pressures will be typical or normal.
But - you may have oil bypassing the filter if a bypass valve is broken.

Normal operation - bypass closed by spring pressure -

If the bypass is broken, oil can take the blue line path, up and around the filter, exiting through the center, never going through the filter media -

Thanks for the explanation. I’m ordering a replacement.
I can't say "exactly" what happened in your case - but, as others have said, something isn't right.
I sure don't want to see you, or anyone, have any issues over a simple part.

Apparently it's a big enough problem (those getting broken or damaged) that there's bulletins about it, so there's that, too.

Yeah, for $30 or so… even if it’s fine (I think you’re right)… for nothing money I’ll replace it. What’s your thoughts on the aluminum aftermarket caps? I change the oil every 5000… I’m thinking the aluminum will mess up the plas

Keep the o-ring in the right spot. (I always lubricate o-rings on any sort of assembly)
Don't over-torque.
With the o-ring sealing it, tighter is not better, there's no reason for tighter
They'll last a lot of miles under normal use and care.
I suspect a lot of the issues are people just not used to this sort of a setup.
You can't mess up most other filter changes, you can mess these up.
