No they aren’t. If you buy an axle housing, the tubes come with it.
In parts nomenclature I'm used to - that's a housing assembly.

When we rebuild, repair, or have to re-position an axle tube - it's resetting the tube in the housing and then welding it in place.
So from a mechanic's point of view, or in manufacturing, the housing is one piece, the tubes another, and the tubes are pressed in and a small weld applied. (red lines) and it becomes an assembly.

Oh my goodness go read an automotive repair manual. Or Google. The housing (or pumpkin, or differential) is the big round thing in the middle. It is a different component (though sold as one complete package) from the axle tubes.

The differential is inside the housing. Google it.

Very few mechanics are going to mess with replacing an axle tube. From the mechanics view, the entire assembly gets replaced.

If you went to classes for auto parts, you'd see they leave out one word - housing assembly.
Those online sellers change words around, use whatever terms they wish, doesn't make it technically correct. I'd never use a reseller as an example of proper names
Google will also show you what most people look up, not what is technically correct. I can get a search term wrong, and if 10,000 other people have also used that term, I still get results. So it's the incorrectness of the masses, I guess. If 10,000 people call a tree a bush, then google will present you with a walnut tree in the results for bush.

It's the lowest common denominator.
Housing is the center in repair and manufacturing, housing assembly has the tubes.
You can't buy just the housing alone, and resellers will call them all sorts of things.
But talk to a guy who is racing and doing repairs for a twisted axle tube and he'll say he had to reset the tube in the housing.
For speed of talking or writing, it will also get called "housing".
Go into the automotive FB pages and forums for older cars and people get really wonky - "I had to remove my dizzy today and replace the gear"
WTF?
What the hell is a "dizzy".
They can't spell, or even know how to abbreviate distributor, so they just toss out something simple.
Now NO ONE says "dist." or "distributor" - it's a dizzy and their kids will grow up clueless as to the real name.

It's the differential housing.

Maybe time to pull out my old TSMs and parts manuals.

I was told to Google axle housing so I was showing the results.

You can’t buy just a center section or pumpkin for a Gladiator. The “housing” comes with tubes pressed in. Therefore the housing or housing assembly is different for the narrow or wide axles. It seems pretty straight forward to me.

Yes it’s the “differential housing”, but it’s not the differential. That’s a big difference.

No, you can’t, but the proper terminology when discussing these things does matter. You used the wrong word. Hence this lovely rabbit hole.

I don’t think I used the wrong word. The housing or axle housing includes tubes. Can you show me where you can buy just the center section for anything that’s not a Ford 9”?

I tried a different Google search, still says includes tubes.

Yes, you did. Alternative facts aren’t really facts.

You. Are. Wrong. It is okay to be wrong. It doesn’t lower your value as a person. But you are wrong.

The first link you provided calls it a “center housing”.

Currie calls it a center section in the link you provided.

Where am I wrong?

You asked me to show you where you can buy a housing without tubes that wasn’t a Ford 9”. That’s what I did.

Yes the first link says center housing…but then you know what they call the parts to the right and left? *whispers* axle tubes. So the part called the housing is *drumroll* what myself and SP have been saying and not the whole axle assembly.

Currie calls it a housing. It’s literally in the top of the picture that you posted. They’re discussing tubes when they say center section (in reference to the housing). As in-the tubes get pressed into the center section.

Ok.

But the “whole axle assembly” is usually a loaded axle.

I’m going on the lake. Have a good one.

Agreed.
But you know how it goes when anyone, even a mechanic, talks - "I changed the differential under my car today" and really, they just got a whole assembly, housing, differential, tubes, axles, backing plates, whatever.

The differential sits inside the differential housing.

Man, I was already dizzy from installing my modified skid plate - thanks a bunch! LOL
