you are arguing semantics and speaking from a parts changers viewVery few mechanics are going to mess with replacing an axle tube. From the mechanics view, the entire assembly gets replaced.
Can you show me where you can buy just the center section for anything that’s not a Ford 9”?
Real mechanics and fabricators in off-road, hot rod, racing, etc swapping axle tubes and housings is very common.
How do you think rear steer axles, narrow drag rear ends, custom portal set ups are done ?
Have I ever called the whole housing assembly, a "housing" or just a "diff" yes but its not correct. I'm just being lazy. usually I referencing when I've grenaded one and I have not opened up to inspect it
In part many call the complete housing just a housing that is still not correct
housing assembly -
a center section- the drop out third like toyota, zuki ford and others
My buggy has custom offset tubes on a toyota housing for 8 inch third members
To build a complete housing or housing assembly one needs:
The housing
Axle tubes
housing ends, or inner C's
press the tubes, use alignment bar and pucks and tack it together then slow alternating welding
Cast housing must be pre-heated then post cooled in usually a oil bath
Many manufactures sell bare housing for example:
9" housings
dana 60 housings for G- body's
