Any chance someone has a picture of their oil filter housing that could be shared, specifically the area shown in the pic below? I did my first oil change today, used a torque wrench, but noticed this - it doesn’t appear to be a full on crack, so I’m curious if this is normal as part of the housing or?

Thanks in advance!

If you’re talking about the diagonal line on the left side of the picture I’d say that looks like a crack. There are a couple people here with super clean engine bays who can get better shots. Mine is dust covered. What was the torque set to? 😂

That definitely looks like a crack, may not have broken all the way through but I would be concerned driving any distance or speeds where I could shut it down immediately Should get it to a shop

Had a look at mine. I have it too, on both sides directly across from each other. Jury is out but I think it’s in the casting. I’ll have an inside look when I take the cap off for my next oil change.

Ha - thankfully I’m not talking about the diagonal line - that’s just a shadow :)…my main concern was that my torque wrench didn’t make a good click the first time around and I over-torqued. Once I did that I backed off and torqued to 18-19ft-lb. Then I looked and saw the vertical line above the bar code and I was like - no way that’s a crack…low-key freaked out a little. I thought it looked more like a tooling mark, so wanted to see if others had similar marks on theirs before further concern.

Yeah - see above, diagonal like is a shadow, I was worried about the vertical mark.

Thanks much! That’s exactly what I was looking for and looks exactly like mine. I bet it’s a tooling mark - I didn’t notice the one directly across as much as it was more raised. That one definitely seemed like a “seam” or something from how these are formed.

This makes me feel much better. I was a little concerned, but knew I didn’t go too far in the torque, but you never know sometimes.

Thanks guys!

Gottcha. I’m super paranoid tightening that thing. I use a big Icon 1/2” and am scared one of these days I’m gonna tighten and hear that sickening crack. Worse than the crack of a broken bone.

Ya, me too. This last oil change I torqued the cap to 17lbs, not 18. Easy goes it, slow and steady on and off. I’m so gentle with it, the cooler doesn’t even know the cap is coming off or being put on. Once on and the torque bar has sounded, I step away slowly.

Looks like it could just be a mold line on a molded plastic part.
But it is just my assumption.
FYI.....worked in plastics for over 40 years.....
Yeah, I am one of the retired ol'farts
Haha - thanks! I’ll take that insight for sure!

Yeah - it’s the last sound I want to hear for sure! I replaced the oil cooler/filter housing on our previous minivan and I’d prefer to not have to do it again…

Hahaha - that is the only way….

I never torque mine. I just turn it until it stops at the flange. Anything with a plastic cap or housing I treat the same way. A tee handle driver is a good idea too. An unnecessary side load would be my guess is the cause for the caps and housings to fail. It's really not a design flaw, it's user error. Using a long extension on the socket to hold the load centered is best.

Makes sense to me!
