I may or may not work at FCA ;)

What people don't realize is that a large portion of the rising price of vehicles is due to governmental regulations and required features.

Emissions fines, MPG fines, ABS brakes, collision warnings, safety features, all of these required items are all costed into the final product selling price to the customer.

Yes FCA has to make a buck... but compare our margins to the margins of the phone or clothing industry. Not even close. You are getting a great deal for what is required from all of the OEM's vehicles

Thank you for reading! Lots of people have been able to exchange many important views, often differing viewpoints, because of this forum moderated by Jay, and driven by Jeep generated excitement only because the amazing work at FCA to get the Jeep Gladiator 2020 to market. I'm grateful. And, as you may see "bitter" because I believe .... Lol. Plywood! Anyway, if we are only talking to the point you address, I'd like to see wages equally well defined. A Jeep in 1980 cost about 10K, now it's 30K. Are people making three times what they made, or have we let all the advances in robotics and technology lay waste... But that may be a different topic for a different time!

The hidden cost of government and it's regulations are enormous. Emotional based voters never see the consequences to the promises and assurances from politicians and their unelected bureaucrats. There is no free lunch in life folks.

I own a $100k Trackhawk Jeep...my Hellcat CJ7 cost almost that much to build...whether you buy or build high end always costs alot.
Now with capacity of around 120K units the price point will reflect that along with market demand.
It is possible the Gladiator will be reasonable but dealer ADM will price it beyond a reasonable price point for the masses.

One hundred thousands dollars, eh? Was it worth it? A, and B, what did you get at that price point that a lesser version could not give you? I'm questioning the 'buy reasons'. Mostly to learn although I don't know why because I will never use the knowledge. Just consider me a nosey neighbors. Whatcha got there? Why?

I don't think some of you folks recognize inflation for what it is.

I paid $37,500 for my first house in 1989.

For several decades I refused to pay more for an automobile than I did for that house, and that policy served me well. In 2016 I paid $54 more than that for a new Ram 2500 4x4. In 2017 I paid $4,000 more than that for a JKRHR.

I really wanted a Gladiator, but it was an egregious violation of my economic policy. So, I opened an online inflation calculator and entered the data 1989/$37,500/2019=$77,592.04 which put my $54,000. JTR well under budget and it is sitting in the driveway today.

This is assuming quite a high rate of inflation, but nonetheless, you're not wrong.

Also factoring in is people's rate of income increase relative to inflation. 'Expensive' is a relative term. Without a direct competitor, it's even more difficult.

Whatever it takes to justify your purchase...good for you, but inflation calculators are only ball park numbers.

My house cost $83,500 in 1991 and the calculator says it should be worth $155,000 now. Yet my house was appraised last year for $138,000 (and now it has a 26x40 garage, two ponds, metal roof etc)

My 93 dodge cummins cost $20,000; my 2016 ram cummins should have cost $36,000 but I paid $40,000 (sticker 51,000) etc...

Has nothing to do with the value of any item, and everything to do with the value of the currency you are using to buy an item.

You could very easily have a hard asset depreciate while your currency does the same thing.

So you justified price but not value. If the gladiator cost $76,000, that would be under budget.

An 1981 scrambler cost $10500 new (base was $7300). It should have increased 182% or $29650. That's inflation...I believe.
