So, I've got a 2008 4dr Jeep Wrangler X with 152K miles with zero damage and clean and slick (I take care of my stuff) that I'm selling to add to the pile of cash I'll put down on a Gladiator. It's go custom wheels and oversized tires and it is very clean and well maintained.

Since I never thought I'd sell it, I thought I'd ask what an estimated private seller sale price would be? I live in the Memphis area and I understand that different locations means different prices but, I need a price point to start.

Locally they sell from $17K to $14K, more on the higher end, a used car dealer told me $9,500 was the loan value and all he could give me. I haven't reached out to get a trade in estimate, but I can't believe they'd go above the used car dealer on a trade in.

Thoughts???

A car dealer is in business to make money so he has to buy low and sell high or his business will perish. On the flip side private sale prices are usually so overdone that they are not a reliable barometer either. What someone is asking for a used car and what someone is willing to pay for said car are quite often very different numbers. Is your snapshot above actual closed deals or what someone is trying to get for their Jeep? If the used car guy told you he'd pay "loan value" for it then he knows he can sell it for more or he wouldn't pay it. I would bet a lot of money that those listings expire unsold. You also mentioned trade in. Looks like you're in West Tennessee and our sales tax is just stupid so you may get a benefit from trading in less sales tax. That is usually not as much as the extra amount you could sell it for vs trade in. (can you get an extra 7% or higher to break even?) The problem with older vehicles is it is hard to get them financed, it is much better now than it used to be but rates are higher and for shorter terms than modern day vehicles. You have a very focused band of potential buyers that want a 12 year old vehicle that is still somewhat valuable and either have cash to buy it or very strong credit. I decided to sell my ZJ about a month after I brought the LE home and at first I tried to see if I could find an idiot and listed it for $6500 which was much less than I had in it. I didn't get a single bite after two weeks so I started dropping the price until buyers started showing legitimate interest. At $5000 I started getting tons of calls and people looking at it and sold it for $4500. Not a very good strategy but good enough to test the market.

Likely they won’t. It’s got years and miles and no matter how clean the dealer will have issues moving it so it’ll go to auction at no where near 9500. I’d throw a good detail at it and start hustling it on the private market, you’ll capture more there because while it has the miles it’s very clear and cared for plus premiums like wheels and tires.

As for a price point I’d take a good look at your whole market area and try to figure a good rule like price/miles then add some haggle on top, offer to take X off the deal to make it happen, just like the dealers do. You get it sold and they feel victorious.

Yeah I forgot to mention that all the dealer will do on the trade in is call a wholesaler. When I was in undergraduate school I worked at Darrell Waltrip Honda in Franklin, TN and they usually had no idea what the older, high mileage cars were worth the the wholesaler kept a guy there on busy days to buy cars.

Auto or manual? Power windows? What color?

As others alluded to, IF you sell to a private party, you may need to take into account sales tax. If the dealer will give you $9500 on trade and sales tax is 7%, then you may need $10,165 or more in private party value, for instance.

Let me know where you land...I’m looking for a Jeep about like that for my wife

The 3.8 L minivan engine is really going to hurt the resale value on yours. The 2012-present wranglers are pretty cheap on lots as it is right now.

Check out vroom.com for an instant offer. I’ve had great experiences with their process and they always come in $2k-$4k higher than local trade offers and Carmax.

2-door or 4-door? The 4-doors go for several thousand more. For reference, I just sold my 2015 2-door Willys with 86k miles for $18,500. Last summer I sold a 2013 2-door with 145k miles for $16,000. But also figure I only had $16k in my 2016, so there are deals out there to be found. I know this might not be entirely encouraging to your situation, but hopefully offers some insight into the JK market value.

I would get a couple of prices from Vroom and Carmax and then sell it privately for about $2K more than that...

Did the same thing. Sold my 2012 2 door sport, 90000 miles for 19250. Took a month but happy with what I was able to get for it.
Ordered my JT 7/6 and patiently waiting.

Update: after pricing the car to start at $12,500, I got the first offer from a guy who drove 4 hours and gave me $11,500 in $100 bills. By the time he got here (same day I put it up for sale), I already had 10 other calls from interested folks. I figure $11,500 cash was a good deal. So now I'm on the hunt, need to find a dealer offering under invoice in the Tennessee/Arkansas/Mississippi area.
