Anyone have electrical issues? My Jeep started acting crazy today

Correct. The dealer replaced it. The battery would not charge up and it is needed to control the electronics while you start the vehicle - would not start at all, not even a jump start. And after doing a jump-start attempt, the dash went wild and the wiper blades slowly moved back and forth - even though it was turned off. So I bet you have water around your ess battery. If you watch the Genesis Dual Battery install video it actually shows you how to get to the ESS battery - you take it out when you do the dual battery install. After watching this video I can see how water can get in there. Bad design - engineers should be flogged for this, allowing water to get in there in the first place.



I think I will be doing the dual battery install in the near future - this is one good reason for it, plus others.

Runs fine - but UConnect system gives me 'Device not Supported' and the GPS is not working - don't know if they are the same problem or 2 different problems. Back down to the dealer on Wednesday.

Usually, the Device Not Supported message on the Uconnect screen indicates that the USB cable for the phone needs replaced.

The Genesis kit would be a good idea. The only thing I don't like about it is the cost. If the batteries have to be replaced out of warranty, that would be a good time to install it.

It sucks I had to fix it myself (well I didn’t HAVE TO, but I don’t have time to take it in) and fork out the $1,100 for the Genesis kit and batteries, but after dealing with that stupid piece of shit battery, it’s worth every dollar spent to me.

I didn’t, but I fought the ESS since my rig was driven off the lot. Most people hate it, but I like it because I drive a lot around town. Most of the time the aux battery didn’t charge and the alternator was always charging the main battery. After 5,000 miles I just said screw it and bought the Genesis kit. It’s $500 for the kit+ $285 +$285 for batteries. You can go cheaper on batteries, but I was like why at that point. I have other accessories that are now separated from the cranking battery and it was worth the cost to me.
That aux battery seems to cause people a lot of grief!

Does installing the Genesis setup void your warranty? I'm just wondering if you have other unrelated electrical issues in the future, will they say its not covered because you installed the Genesis setup.

Followup - took it in to the service department. Not only device not supported but the NAV was off by a few miles and wrong direction of travel. Turns out the UConnect system lost it's id numbers and a new unit is on order. It apparently is a common enough problem that they have a TSB for it.

Anyone else had any issues like in the video? My Jeep has currently been at a dealership since Tuesday morning and they don’t have any ideas what the issue is. They say they are working with Chrysler tech.

I imagine the dual battery upgrade would be treated like any other mod you make to your rig. If the dealership can prove it caused something to fail, then you will be on the hook for that repair. I don’t believe they can legally void your warranty because you replaced the factory batteries with something better. Some dealerships order and install the Genesis upgrade on new rigs. As with any mod, you’re changing something that came from the factory. There’s always a risk associate with it any change. Anyway, there is no definitive answer to your question, but I would say no to voiding your warranty.

I had some self inflicted electrical issues recently and think of your jeep's electrical system like a computer network. You have all these sensors/modules that end up at three main hubs that jeep calls STAR connectors. I know two are behind your glovebox. All three STAR connectors have connections to each other. One STAR connector is for the high speed CAN bus (CAN-IHS) which controls more non-essential stuff such as the radio, HVAC, etc. That STAR connector has a connector to the CAN-BODY STAR connector which controls a bunch of other things. That STAR Connector then has connections to the CAN-C STAR connector that goes to things like the PCM.

If you really want to get down in the weeds you can download the wiring diagrams HERE and start looking at how things connect. I would start with the CAN-IHS-BUS-SYSTEM and CAN-C-BUS-SYSTEM ones. Those give a general idea of what modules connect to where. Then you could start taking information from all the codes and warning messages and see where those things connect. Look for the common point where everything meets and you should have a decent idea where to start looking.

For what it's worth, you can look at my thread HERE. While the issues are not the same, you can see that a single broken wire from the CAN-C STAR connector to the PCM caused all my issues. With the intermittency of your problems I would imagine where ever that common point for all those modules converge has some short in it.

How long did your dealer take to fix your issue. Seems like I’m never going to get mine back.

they had it 5 business days . Had it towed in on a Thursday and picked it back up Wednesday. They initially thought the PCM was bad but after more probing found the bad wire.
