8.4 Upgrade vrs Aftermarket

I want to upgrade a 7" radio to the 8.4, starting to realize its high cost. What are the opinions and reliability of the several aftermarket versions? Stinger is one, several others. I want the same capabilities, such as gauges and a good trails navigation, not just regular highways. I tried to connect the OnX app from my phone to the 7" radio and it doest work right. Prob something im not doing right

Were you using CarPlay? I have OnX and it works great through my 7” on CarPlay. What irritates me is that CarPlay doesn’t fill the whole screen, but I’m not sure if I really want to spend $1300 to upgrade to Insane Audio just to have a bigger CarPlay screen.

Is Car Play an Apple app? i have an Android and was trying to hook to it, was also trying to stream Sirius XM with no luck. Never really had a vehicle that had this avail so im prob doing something wrong i guess

Apple CarPlay and android car play are separate technologies, I don’t remember if the the 7” has Android, as we have iPhones, but I think it does. To use either in this vehicle you need to plug into usb, instead of using Bluetooth. It’s a really nice seamless connection. Sending and receiving texts via voice is my favorite function with car play. Very safe and works quite well. Depending on your phone model and/or software version, the dash USB port works much better than the one in the center console.

You may want to try OnX again. I just got an email today saying OnX is now available for Android Auto. It has been showing up on my screen but "was in the works" or something like that.

Does anyone know if the Mopar part number 68417861AK listed for the 8.4 radio will fit a 2020 sport s. If so is it plug and play? My dealer is giving me the run around. There has to be a way to upgrade from 7 inch to 8.4.

There is not a Jeep/Mopar approved upgrade path to the 8.4 Uconnect. There are some aftermarket options, or you can source and install one, but there is no dealer support. It is less hassle to trade the truck in.

What? Its pretty much plug and play...you need to have the Xm and GPS antennas (which mine has already wired up) and i have the speaker/sound upgrade, not sure if that has anything to do w it

You may want to try OnX again. I just got an email today saying OnX is now available for Android Auto. It has been showing up on my screen but "was in the works" or something like that.

I cannot get OnX to connect right, and i havent bought the premium version because i want ro see how it is in the radio. I can get satilite views of Goog Maps just fine. But i have to have the paid version to enable the app on Uconnect

Apparently OnX works with Android Auto now, but I havent tried it yet.

I installed the Insane Audio JL3001 a while back for this exact reason - I wanted OnX access, plus full android capability. Ive been pretty happy with it. I went from the 7" OEM unit to the JL3001 and its been great.

The JL3001 has a 9" screen, and its a big upgrade over the OEM unit - The Stinger Heigh10 was attractive with its screen size, but I wasnt a fan of the bezel style / button layout. The big deciding factor for me came down to two things - and anyone here who has the stinger, please correct me if I am wrong here -

1) Stinger unit runs an older version of Android than the JL3001, and at this point Stinger is not offering the option to update it.
2) Stinger reportedly has a long boot time - 20 seconds or so every time you start the truck, as the unit fully shuts down / the JL3001 goes to sleep mode so it wakes back up quicker.

It does, but limited. They are obviously a shop full of Apple fanboys. They need to hire Android devs.

Based on other threads, it can be done. You will have to add GPS and SiriusXM antennas, and things like remote start from the app and off road pages are not available. The bezel probably has to be ordered separately.

The 7inch which I have now has siriusXM
So there has to already be an attena. The GPS and Sirius are on the same antenna.
