6g is going to be here in 5-6 years. All the tech that 5g opens the door for is going to be insane on 6g. Every device you buy from a TV to a fridge to laundry machines and cars will just have 6g IOT available in a decade.

And some cranky "real murrica" type is gonna be worried about their dial up access going away and where will they find 1,000 hour AOL CDs in this brave new world.

AT&T did give new phones to get 4G and 5G...
4G is still pretty good in the "boonies"...
AT&T has never been known to give anyone anything. I been with them a long time. You pay one way or the other. My phone gets 4g and when I am in a 5G area it will show 5G but my house is supposed to be covered by 5G and my phone does not show that. Neither does my wifes' iPhone 13 Pro. All it ever shows is LTE. I could see mine possibly not since its iPhone XS Max but her's has updated everything. There is a tower right down the road and our neighborhood has one of those area coverage camouflage towers right at the entrance. I still get one bar on my phone. I get one bar on my phone standing in the driveway sometimes 2 bars. Same with my wife's phone. I don't think any of them are worth the money paid. My mother in law has T-Mobile and she just new Iphone and she also doesn't get 5G in an area that is supposed to be covered by 5G.

A lot less holes than 3g....

Doesn't include the old sprint map, though. Overlay them, and it's a lot more like what I experience. The sprint one includes roaming, so it's a lot better. Also, 3g simply works better in the mountains and woods than 4g, and definitely 5g. 4g and 5g don't work at all in the unpopulated state forest between my house and my job. In areas that any carrier ostensibly says "covered", there is no signal because of trees/mountains blocking the tower. 3g works better with a weak signal, at least for voice operation. Again, I hope it improves. Because part of the problem is that this merger has been a bit of a clown show. So hopefully Sprint/T-Mobile is an anomaly, but as of now, 4g+ pretty much only works in town.

Then maybe it's time for the backwater 3rd world undeveloped parts of the US to get with the program and stop being envious of them fancy city folk with all them G's they got. Just wait 5-6 years and them fancy city folks gun'a have another G and be up to six I recon.
Do you not ever have to drive through the "country" to get from one city or town to the next? That's where there's no 3g/4g. In any valley between two mountains. 3g and 4g are functionally less reliable. The range is far too short. I'm not anti 5g. It's great at home. Almost as fast as wifi. But 4g and 5g suck in between towns. Only 3g works.

But, I'm sure they will fix the issues (I hope anyway). If taking down 3g allows more newer towers, maybe they'll be able to build enough of them to make up the difference, quickly.

I'm talking bout of both sides of my mouth, because when 4g and 5g work, which is most of the time, they are awesome. But when they don't, the current fallback is 3g. And I see that fallback quite often on my commute and in my travels.

I would think that in a 2013 Nissan Leaf, the 3G modem would be the last thing I’d worry about not working anymore :CWL:
It's the most reliable and low maintenance vehicle I have ever owned.

Yup my electric car puts every other car or truck I've owned to shame when it comes to maintenance, just straight up no oil changes can't be competed with.

They say there is coverage at my house and I am in a major city area. But yet we do not see it on our devices. No speed increase. Nor does the phone change to show 5G as it does in other areas. But they certainly raised my fees for this so-called service. They told me I needed to upgrade my phone. I was like this thing is only 2 years old and is still very functional for what I do with it. Perhaps they should give me a new phone to go with the new rates increase. Having traveled overseas a lot over the years we are indeed way behind others.
My parents with 3g phones received free 4g phones from att.

The 5G towers will have to be closer together than they were with 3G.

22 years since what? Last I checked, it's barely been a decade since major phones primarily used 3G, plus consumer had an expectation of those phones having a lifespan. To make no mention of embedded devices - which is the largest source of people's concerns with 3G being deprecated.

Outside of AT&T wanting to reclaim this spectrum for monetary purposes, can you list another reason they want to deprecate this technology so quickly?
Yep, to force hold outs to upgrade to newer handsets.

It was announced. Lol a lifespan? What tinfoil hat looney tune expected their cellphone to last a life span? Seriously?

It’s called evolution. Oh no!! Faster cellphone service! Go back to 3G, Verizon, they’re watching me!

Another reason? Uh yeah. Better cellphone service and faster speeds, pretty simple.

You don't get that its faster service for some and potentially no service at all for others? I agree that faster service is great, but not if its not available where you live.

Those coverage maps are pure fantasy. I don't know how they measure coverage but its safe to assume the antenna isn't inside a car or a house.

Because there isn't any coverage where I'm sitting right now in NH.

ATT recognized this and because I'm a good customer they gave me a nano-cell for inside my house that I plug into ethernet.

Its unfortunate that no cell manufacurers make a truly decent implementation of wiFi calling.

Neither my friend's Samsung nor my iPhone will flip to WiFi unless the cell phone signal is absolutely gone.

I can be sitting in my living room with 5 bars of 1 gb/s WiFi and one spotty bar of cellular and it will make the call on cellular.

The ATT Nanocell solves that problem. They just sent me a new one actually because the old one was 3g. I believe the new one is 4g/5g.

Yep gotta get that latest 6G fridge, baby's gonna let me know when I'm outta beer and also ping all the beer manufacturers to send beer ads my way when I open the fridge. Every 3rd opening it plays an ad and it's just a minor inconvenience I have to listen to it, else it won't close fully.

What do you find more logical?

*They’ve been planning this transition for years and they’re shutting down 3G to expand their 4G/5G capacity throughout the country because 3G is taking up the frequencies they need on limited spectrum controlled by the FCC.

*Cellphone companies are the evil empire and have no plan in place and just plan to flip the switch leaving millions in the dark while they laugh all the way to the bank on UW5G in their big cities with lots of towers.
