I’m thinking seriously about adding a rear winch to my setup. I’m very happy with my front winch, but would like an option to self recover from the rear. I want it to be removable and portable, as I don’t want to swap my rear bumper, and I want to be able to use it for the off-road trailer if necessary as well. I like the idea of the super winch Winch2Go, but am not happy with 4k. I’m fine with receiver mounted, but it makes it bulkier to store when not in use. What are others using? I’d rather not even approach the cost of my front primary winch (Warn Evo 12s), as this will be much more seldom used probably. Has anyone used the Champion 12k synthetic portable from Cabelas for $699? Other thoughts? Thanks in advance.

The issue with receiver-mounted winches is that the hitch receiver may not be rated for the pull rating of the winch.

I want it for self recovery. My receiver is rated for 7000. My JT weighs around 5200. My trailer is around 3000, but I’d recover it separately if needed. So I was thinking a 9k would work well. With lots of wrap it’s not pulling 9k anyway.

I just looked up some badland models. It would be nice if they had a 9k synthetic. I’d like to be able to use all my synthetic friendly recovery gear. I’d even take a 7 from someone. I could then get a receiver plate to finish it off.

Don’t forget you will have to run big wires to the back so you have enough current flow for the amount of amps the winch needs.

Well aware. I’m really looking to see if someone has experience with a portable setup they like. Thanks.

Honestly I would probably do a 4K w a snatch block if I was really worried bought rear self recovery.

you can search receiver mount set ups.

They are heavy, cumbersome and not many do them. Carrying 2x fulls use winch’s is hit to the old payload totals.

We’re alone on trails a lot with overlanding, so would like the piece of mind, but I agree with you on weight. I’ve considered the super winch winch2go, which essentially comes in a toolbox. It’s synthetic and is 4k. I already have a factor55 pully for synthetic. I feel like if it was 6k I’d have already bought it.

Hi,
I have a similar setup for our offroad camper/truck. Wired front and rear, and switch it front to back as needed. I went this way because i didn't want to have to carry the weight all the time, plus it's not exposed to the elements constantly.
Heavy yes, somewhat hard to store on the truck at times, not so much. Make sure your hitch is up to the task and your good.
Hand my setup checked out at overland expo, was taking a class on winch safety and was told i was fine. Watch your angles.

Meaning don’t pull to hard from a side angle I assume? I’d be careful with anything too lateral from the receiver and would maybe just hook to the side of the frame instead. What size do you have? Do you have any pictures to share?

I purchased the winch2go for the very same reason as you, for rear self recovery when out solo, which is most of the time. I got the steel cable one, mostly because I was able to save some $ by purchasing a returned one on Amazon for $140 off. I have not had to use it yet (because Gladiator's don't get stuck:)) so I can't give you a review.

Yes, i make sure i pull as straight as possible, using directional anchors. This comes from a climbing/rigging background. Don't winch a ton. I try to avoid it if possible.
Can get photos to you, truck camper had a pack rat move in, and i'm still dealing with an electrical issue.
Winch for truck/camper is smittybilt x20 12k. Gladiator has warn zeon 10.
Am going to get the back of the gladiator wired for the winch, and carry the one from the truck when i go solo.
I only have it on the camper when i am solo and someplace where i could get stuck.

The only time I’ve used my winch, for me, was a snowy shelf road where my rear slid down and off a bit. Wasn’t dangerous, but wasn’t getting out without a winch assist. My front worked that time to an uphill tree, but if a front tire were off, I’d want another option. I’ve used my front many times helping others out though. :)

Can you speak to build quality by any chance? I’ll get the synthetic only because I’ve already got a bunch of recovery gear for synthetic rope. Thanks.
