So I traded my 2018 JLUR last night for a 2022 JTR. Got home got the crawler out rolling around underneath and noticed I have CV joints on the front axle. No U-joints. I do not have the auto transfer case option or full time. Haven’t tried to shift to 4wd yet but did something change or is this strange? Gear shifter does not show auto. Wonder if CV joints are the norm now. IDK, let me know what y’all think.

If you don't have the "4H AUTO" position to the left of "4H PART TIME" then they've made a change.
Frankly, I'm good with that because of the jerking of standard u-joints.
Iv'e had CV joints in several vehicles and they go a lot of mile, and are a whole lot smoother. Only the boots are normally ever a problem but even those typically last me 80,000 or more.
I replaced the first set of boots on my Eagle at over 100,000 miles and the axles I have in it now have 10 years and 33,000 miles and no cracks.

I have part time shift lever decals. Weird. I’m gonna put it in 4wd when I leave work see what’s going on.

There's the hassle of boot maintenance, but give me CV joints any day.

Watch this and see why u-joints up front jump and jerk on turns - with ONE joint, at a severe angle, that wheel is trying to speed up twice every revolution and slow down twice every revolution......

I don’t mind the cv shafts just thought that default was u-joints and you paid extra for full time and cvj. But yes the binding is definitely what gets most ujoints. I am curious when this started. Also a assume this still has the FAD on it. Knuckles are still aluminum. Just thinking this is weird.

Just drove around gravel parking lot 4 low locked. No problem. Guess I got lucky and got cv joint shafts. Something to look for. Gonna ride by another dealer that just got a rubicon gladiator 2022 in to see what it has. Curious now.

They either made a change or they installed the wrong front axle in yours. If you are not a hard core wheeler rolling on 37's+ I'd rather have the CV's.

Hmmm, paid extra for the t-case, wiring, technology, etc. - but have you seen how much these trucks have gone up?
I was talking about what used to be option, what is now standard, etc. - and a JT like mine has gone up $4,000 in two years. Not all of that is inflation. We figured the cost of what was an option in my first one vs what is standard now - and that 4K is paying for most of those now-standard things. I'm not getting them free. They took, just for some loose numbers, a $56,000 truck, and made xyz standard and added it's option price to that 56K.
You know the cost of those axles is being paid for - by you. You didn't get them free. They raised the price of the vehicle to cover it.

If this is a change, I wonder if the Wrangler got the same change. Also could be a parts thing, maybe. Easier to get the CV joints in than I joints, so they are run with it. Doesn't seem like there's a downside for most. I'm imagining if it's on a jeep, it's beefy enough to handle some crawling. They know their audience.

Since the majority of these will go to people mostly driving them on the streets and highways, no matter how hard the hard core guys will scream about it and how wrong it is, Jeep must keep expanding their market, sell to more and more people - people who demand smooth, quiet, etc. so it is very possibly a way to make things less prone to extra vibration and noise. Those front shafts turn even in 2 wheel drive mode, there is still a bit of a drag on turns. It makes sense. CV are very strong - the only weak point, IMO is the lubrication needed, they need to be protected, covered, so boot tears are the real issue.

It's on a Rubicon though, so if they are doing it, I'm betting it's been vetted/tested. I know the trim differences are minimal, but there'd be some major backlash (especially if it's on the Wrangler too) if they made the "crawling" trim truly worse for crawling.
