Here’s a render from a guy who was pretty close on the Tundra. Rumor has it that it will get the Turbo 4/10 speed from the 2022 Lexus NX. Rear discs and 4-link coil-sprung rear axle. I’m also hearing it got pushed back a year and will now be a 2024 in Late 2023. It’s going to be on the new TNGA global platform with the 22 Tundra, 23/24 Sequoia and 4 Runner.

I’m a Toyota fan because of their reliability. I loved my ‘08 Tundra and had it for almost twelve trouble free years. But the Tacoma was a real let down for me.

I hope for their sake that is an accurate representation, because as it sits now the present model is a real swing and a miss…

The new Tacoma should be decent, but I was NOT impressed with the 2017 and 2020 Tacomas I test drove before ordering the Gladiator. I did own a 2009 Tacoma for a few years and that was a great truck. The 3rd gen honestly felt like a step back from the 2nd gen in just about every category.

The first time I drove a Gladiator back in February I was fully expecting the usual Jeep experience. Instead I got a truck that shifted better, rode smoother and had more room inside than the Tacoma. Plus you can take the roof and doors off AND flat tow them.

Totally agree. I had a 2016 which was the first year of the 3rd Gen. I thought family members 2nd had a better dash gauge cluster, mine truly looked like the same gauges (updated) out of my 82 Toyota Truck just blue instead of green. Non disk brakes in the rear, the 3.5 engine had no low end torque compared to families 2nd gens of my 2008 FJ. Only thing I felt the 3rd gen had was a slightly deeper bed box and better mileage (with sacrifice or torque) Starting in 2017 they finally added a power rear slider, my buddy had a 17 to my 16. However, I got Gladiator Rubicon and he sold his 17 Tacoma as well and bought Gladiator both with happy with choice

I wonder if this one:

A) has more than an ancient 6spd auto
B) isn't trying to run the engine at 1300 RPM at 80 MPH
C) Has TCM programming that understands there's something between 6th gear and 4th, something between 3rd gear and 1st
D) makes ANY torque below 3000 RPM
E) has electronics (stereo, dash, etc) dating past 1998 technology

I had a '19 TRD Pro. Absolutely the WORST vehicle I've ever owned (and I go through vehicles like underwear), without a close second. Got rid of it in 6 months (a new record for me). I will NEVER so much as look at a Toyo dealer.
I came from an ‘18 TRD Pro. I didn’t hate it, but it got me to 40k miles over 3-years without issue and I still think it’s a sharp looking truck. The only thing I miss is the power slider on the rear window. Aside from that I can’t think of anything where the taco excelled

The Jeep rides so much better, has a electronics system from this decade, and it’s just more fun (I can take the top and doors off).

The bed box on the Taco is what they call “composite”. In other words, it’s not a real pickup bed box in the traditional sense. better not even think about putting any sort of weight like a rack and RTT on it without re-enforcing it with steel bed stiffeners.

I was a lifelong Toyota guy too, until I bought the 2019 Taco and it broke the streak. I just never could quite seem to bond with it. It was reliable but that’s about the only thing I liked about it.

100% agree on the step back. The 2016 TRD Off -Road felt "cheaper" than the Gen 2 trucks. I am not a fan of the 3.5 L compared to previous 4.0L

My 09 Tacoma, the steering column collapsed in my lap while driving. A/C failed 4x in the first 2 years. Biggest POS I have ever owned.

I go back and forth on the Taco. I do feel Toyotas are good trucks. My wheeling buddy has one and while he has it relatively built with Icon suspension and armor. It still struggles to keep up with the Gladiator. On a trail this past weekend he needed to utilize the electric aids and locker to get through sections the Gladiator rolled through with little issue. If Toyota at a minimum fails to address the transmission issues I would definitely pass .....

I was watching some "B" movie at the beginning of COVID and this guy with a Range Rover was being chased and met a lady friend in a Cabin in the Woods. The guy says to the lady -- I am going in the woods to do blah, blah... The lady says, "that city car is not good for the woods"; take my Ridgeline; or something like that.... I could not stop laughing... I also changed the channel...

I'm surprised how many here echo my experience. I was a Toyota truck fanboy for years. Always swore I'd never own a Jeep (no truck option at the time) and was leary of domestics. Had 3 Tundras and 1 Tacoma. I never enjoyed driving fullsize around town and the Tundras just feel bigger than they are. So then I got a brand new 2016 Tacoma TRD Offroad and was a little disappointed. Engine and transmission never seemed on the same page. Wife hated it because it was uncomfortable in the front and too small in the back to travel with our daughter. Fast forward passed one more Tundra and I got my 2021 Gladiator because I didn't want another fullsize but wanted to appease the wife with more room than the Tacoma. I was shocked how much better the Gladiator was vs the Tacoma in everyway except road noise. First time my wife road in it she said "it's way better than the Tacoma". Not to mention the truck is just enjoyable to drive around and has personality. The size for me is really a goldilocks fit between fullsize and midsize. If reliability is decent I will be eating crow for a while for all the crap I talked about domestics and Jeeps over the years.
